Had a good one myself. Ran the 50 Mile Challenge a 52.4 mile run across Kent farmland that started at 6am this morning. Completed the course in 9 hours and 12 mins. A personal achievement for me as Ive never ran so far or spent so long on my feet and raised money for the GTF too. BUt it hurts everywhere now.

Anyone up for the Roundshaw 5K tomorrow morning then? Come on, dont be scared, it's a good hangover cure!
Just seen the stats for the first Roundshaw 5K on Saturday, there were 46 runners with times ranging from 17.29 to 36.18, so don't feel uneasy about entering, the standard is very widespread. Been to Banstead several times, the organisation is excellent IMO and the details on the website are second to none. Hopefully Roundshaw will prove successful, & don't forget it is free.

Latest (short) update from the blog:

Five years into this triathlon lark and I have finally broken 2 hours 30 for a standard distance race. I managed it at the Bedford Classic Triathlon on Sunday with a final time of 2.27:14 - I didn't quite manage to finish in the top half of my AG (51st/87) but well into the top half of the overall field so pretty pleased with that.

Despite a horrible swim in a reed-infested river (26:31), I managed a swift T1 (1:56) and was comfortable throughout the bike maintaining a 32kph average speed to come home in 1.14:50. Another quick T2 (1:06 - must try to get this under 1 minute) was followed by a run of 42:51 (a bit short perhaps?). It's all finally starting to come together.

Since the last update I have also done two bike time trials - one a ten miler in 27:48 (target time was 30 mins!) and a hilly 7.2 mile course round Beachy Head in 24:16. Really enjoyed both of them and hope to do some more.

Next two races are the Eastbourne 2K sea swim on Sunday (first time doing this for three years) and another crack at Bexhill 5K next Wednesday. Please, please don't be windy!

Cheers Old man of Tom. I questioned the naming of the 'Roundshaw Downs' to the event organiser, Paul, pointing out the fact that people of Croydon aren't likely to be attracted by the name of Roundshaw, to which he replied "we are about breaking down barriers and pre-conceptions, as well as running".

A very intellegent, forthright man and had me impressed & convinced it could work.

Can anyone suggest a good place to get some decent running shoes in Central London? Is the little shop just off Victoria St still the best?

I want to run more regularly but the last few times I've been I've had to run on the grass of Battersea Park or Clapham Common as the roads play havoc with my knees and ankles due to not having proper trainers.

Excellent BR. There's a couple of guys at the Banstead run who wear Palace tops. Hopefully this will be a success, the ground looks pretty decent for running going by those photos.

This chap at my work recently did an ultra-triathlon in Roth, Germany (about 150,000 spectators watch it!).

Basically, it's a 3.8km swim, 180k cycle ride (effectively London to Brighton, and back) and a nice marathon to finish off with. Also, they close the finish line after 10hrs 30mins so you cant actually officially finish after that....he did it in something like 10hrs 10mins)

The Roundshaw 5K was good again this morning, I think it had 50 runners this time including a lot of newbies. I was 13th in 22.41 and can definitely go quicker than that, especially when less hungover!

I did roundshaw today, only started including the treadmill in my gym programme about 4 weeks ago, i was getting pains in my lower back when i managed 30 minutes, but the correct running shoes have solved all that.

I haven't run outside before today in any sporting way for 25 years i reckon, so my target was just to finish.

Im really pleased i did it, and everyone is really friendly, looking forward to getting my time down now, and have entered the croydon 10K

my update...

have done no runnig since Feb. (apart from once or twice on treadmill for 10 mins).. sciatica problems have improved a hell of a lot, however for the past couple of months the problem hs been tight achilles. If I do the achilles strecth on a step then it is almost unbearable. gold ball treatment on my feet seems to have helped my calf's - although i dont think being bale to hear my tendodns etc crack over the sound of the TV is a good sign!

Got my final appoitment with nhs podiatrist this coming week to get feet measured/moulded for heel lifts. back consultant and posiatrist are confident that wearing the heel lifts for 9-12 mths will sort it out.

physical activity for myself? backl to doing some sprt 6 or 7 days per weeek. cycling to work twice per week (20 mile round trip), badminton once per week again (big plus being able to do badminton again), trips down the forest on my bike... and the gym 3-6 times per week doing weights/core work. This is the importnat thing for me - 4 physios, 2 poditrists, 1 sports massage bird and 2 PT's have said my core strenght is horrendous!!!! then again havent done weights etc for over 10 years.

core is still poor but a hell of a lot better then 3 mths ago.
my mistakes in the past have been 100% focused on one sport - eg badminton or biking, then running - no crosstraining.

was going to start light running again week after next in preperation for great south run - but do have a nagging feeling that as soon as i start running the problems are going to come back. time will tell.

managed to lose 9lb + that I put on from no sport pretty quickly.

That's Quelle Challenge Roth - its an Ironman-distance race (although not officially IM branded) that is considered the fastest race in the world over that distance. Indeed Britain's Chrissie Wellington (the current Ironman World Champion) won this years race in a record women's time for the distance (8 hours 31 minutes 59).

The 10 hrs 30 thing isn't quite true - there is indeed a cut-off but it won't be that short - it varies from race to race. Below is a link to this years results (alphabetically as my German isn't good enough to sort it in race order)

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I did Ironman France-Nice last year in 15 hours 53 - the cut-off there is 16 hours but in most races it is 17 hours.

I did Ironman France-Nice last year in 15 hours 53 - the cut-off there is 16 hours but in most races it is 17 hours.
Yeah you're right there, the last time was 15.56 so cut off was probably 16 hours. An amazing achievement though to complete that.

Im really pleased i did it, and everyone is really friendly, looking forward to getting my time down now, and have entered the croydon 10K
Good stuff. I was wondering if anyone else on here was going, I was that fat, bald one wearing the England top (being all chavesque). Come and say hello if you do it again!

Decent running trainers are essential, worth going to Runathon in Surrey St if you're local to Croydon as they do a proper gait test on a treadmill etc

Especially superb to complete in the time your workmate did it in - I can only dream of being that quick if I ever do another.
