There have been rumours of the like above about him, so the club really needs to do some due diligence on this and where he is at mentally if seriously considering him as an option.

I would prefer we look for younger better value elsewhere.
What do you think we’d have to pay AWB if he stayed?

TFM isn’t good enough and probably won’t be

He has incredible pace and a well timed tackle usually. That’s it

His reading of the game was poor although that gave him a chance to show off his pace sometimes. it was basically though getting him out of jail for reacting as someone ran past/off with him not usually seeing the threat

He wasn’t very good at stopping a player either. He always stood off an extra couple of steps so he never got beaten by a guy trying to beat him but... they always passed, crossed or shot around him. He never stopped the delivery

For some reason, probably his pace the bbs spent a year saying he should be ahead of ward for his attacking. One of the most bizzare claims the bbs has ever made. He was simply the worst crosser of any professional footballer of all time! Yes he got forward quickly but didn’t do anything there

If you could teach him those basic things then perhaps, he has the athleticism and timing but at 21 that’s a lot of foundations not in place yet.

On a free he could be a squad player. Our kelly for full back positions but really only if we were desperate for numbers because he isn’t really the quality we need

England international, who knows the club....

Vastly experienced and proven in the Premier League who can slot seamlessly into the side...

For a small slice of what we are getting for AWB...

And people DO NOT want him??

Ohhh but let's gamble our cash on a bloke from Belgium or a youngster from the Championship...

He's said in an interview that his best/favourite position is DM.
But strangely no manager wants to play him there.

I guess you mean my suggestions of younger players, Reece James and Tim Castegne? A gamble really? James has enjoyed a tremendous season on loan at Wigan at 19 years of age. Not only is he an accomplished right full back ,highly rated, but can also slot in as a defensive midfielder. Castegne who has broken into the full Belgium team and had a great season at Atlanta, can play as an offensive full back on both flanks. So both these players offer youth, positional flexibility, and great sell on opportunities, what's not to like? Whilst Clyne is a decent player, I feel that he is not the player we all remember.

Spot on. There have been reports about Clyne’s attitude and off the field issues. If true, then I would say no especially as he will have limited sell in value given he will be 29 next season. Ward is 30 next season, and I would prefer a younger full back for the longer term benefit of the team.

Getting Clyne would just be the first nail in relegation and a waste of about 11m. If we can get him for 1m as Joel Wards understudy, then we are talking.

Ah but they’re not ex Palace players! You forgot the obsession of some people on here. A summer of signing Clyne, Bolasie and Lewis Grabban would probably make some peoples summers!

Stay clear of Clyne. Lots of talk about his attitude/boozing, in his late 20’s so another player on high wages with no sell on value, looked poor at Bournemouth, had quite a few injuries.

Really want us to go after Castagne. Watched Atalanta a few times last season and he looks a really good player. Covers numerous positions as well.

Well not £12m to start with!

I guess he was on a contract worth maybe £10-20k pw max last season with incremental yearly increases written into the duration of the 3 year contract.

With the great season he had I believe that would have fairly merited a major reset/new contract this coming season, so maybe £40-50k pw would have been fair, with further incremental increases written in with continued progress.

The key thing is he is a very valuable asset whereas Clyne after 3 years will have very limited resale value.

Better to target any AWB replacement with a young promising player on lower than £70k pw wages with resale value is essentially what I am advocating.

Blah blah rumours of bad attitude... yawn...

Belgium guy - prem appearances zero = gamble

James - prem experience zero = gamble

Clyne - 175 prem games, 28 (in his prime) = minimal gamble

Obsession with former Palace players or... obsession with untried youngsters and players from exotic leagues?

Spend the 12m and use the rest on a striker.

We don’t need two ageing right backs. Get a younger one, and with Wardy we’ll be well set for a while.

That's the biggest worry for me, we don't need some billy big bollocks coming in with a bad attitude. Personally not convinced Clyne is all that anymore, certainly didn't look it last game of the season.

Or...

Buy an emerging player who will cost less in wages.

Have more money left to buy that far more necessary, big ticket, striker.

Have Ward as a more than capable RB option, in case said new RB isn't ready this year, as opposed to buying Clyne and having less money to fund a new striker, a position in which we have no alternative options we can rely on.

Develop the new RB into an appreciating asset instead of depreciating.

Have a RB player who is young and hungry, as opposed to Clyne.

Have less chance of injuries with young RB as opposed to Clyne.

Actually, nah, f*ck it, let's blow £12M and massive wages on a player who has injury issues, an attitude problem, will be worth peanuts by contracts end and have less money to buy a striker or CAM, positions in which we lack quality far more. Makes way more sense.

Exactly this. Team’s average age needs bringing down and that means paying for young talent that we think will improve rather than old talent already on the way down.
