Let's check our recent record of 'acquisitions' under 24:

Rakip
Jach
Riedewald
Perri
Fonsu-Mensah
Campana
Bamford
Sanogo
Meyer (jurys out)
Sorloth (jurys out)
RLC - very good 'in spells'

Hardly covered ourselves in glory!

Ohhh and this attitude problem... I hope it's more than "footballer likes a drink and a few girlfriends..." or we could rule out half the registered pros.

that's not bad.
take out all the loanees:

jach
riedewald
campana
meyer
sorloth

jach is a dud and we overpaid for sorloth but the others are ok... campana signed for porto after we sold him and now plays for a mid table club in la liga. meyer is not only a good player (the "jury" is only out if the jury is composed of morons who know nothing of football) but we signed him on a free transfer and could always make money on him. and hadn't we signed riedewald he still would have been a part of the ajax team that did great this year. i also think he's a good player but he was signed as a cb and that was never going to work. still, we won't be losing money on him

oh and there are also cases like jordan mutch and jose fonte. mutch was a total waste of money and fonte who was a foreign under 24 player at the time, was way better than some of the more supposedly established players such as cort, ward, davis, etc. So past signings may not necessarily dictate what we should do in the future.

Jairo has been a huge failure for us. He cost almost £10m and has barely played for us.

I was happy to see him leave Palace ... Ward was much better defensively.

he's more than a decent replacement, negotiating with the scousers fills me with dread. I'd rather go for a season long loan

The jury is very much out on MM. If we are being honest he was not on the up when we signed him and please remember free transfers actually cost loads as the players pocket the fee in increased wages, sometimes I'd guess making them hard to move on if necessary? He does some good stuff occasionally but after a season was still not up to speed and easily knocked off the ball.
I'd love him to be our answer to a boring midfield but he seems another Jon Williams really.

The problem is that other clubs find blokes like James who was worth 5m a few months ago, Chilwell, Brooks, Pope, Tarkowski (is that how the bloke at Burnley is spelt?) Mee, and so on. Burnley, Leicester etc look at decent players with a future reasonably assured and pay the going rate but we only go for loans or unknowns.

The steady guys like Tomkins, Dann, Jimmy Mac etc were already in their prime when we got them

Obviously not another Jonny Williams and easily good enough to be part of our match day squad. Our ball retention is clearly better when he plays yet dynamism going forward is lacking.

I agree, the Norwich lad is reportedly only 3M more than the Clyne fee, his value will increase year by year if he is as good as been reported, Clyne's value can only go down,

Ohhh but let's gamble our cash on a bloke from Belgium or a youngster from the Championship...
He is an ex England player, who hasn't played for England for several years and will not again.

His record in the Premier league is not very impressive lately

His wages are double what AWB is getting

Clyne is also a gamble that he might not ever find his previous form, he certainly hasn't for the last few years.

Obsession with former Palace players or... obsession with untried youngsters and players from exotic leagues?

Spend the 12m and use the rest on a striker.
Think his prime was at Palace and a couple of years at Liverpool, after that its been all down hill

Better than AWB,!!! he must be a poor mate or a poor judge of plays, no matter how highly qualified he is.

Nonsense. He had three good seasons at Southampton leading to the transfer at Liverpool and England caps. Two good years at Liverpool and then injury and TRent Alexander Arnold led to Bournemouth loan. I expect he is being written off far too quickly on this thread, but of course there is some risk.

But as I said before l liked him. Not sure Roy did.
I remember an early 90's friendly at the Cottage, a crack Palace side in their pomp, whooped an awful 4th Division Fulham 5-0, Udo Onwere seemed to bear the brunt of the fans ire back then

Clyne is losing his pace. And his pace is his main attribute. He'll decline rapidly now.
