I religiously read it from cover to cover from the mid Eighties to mid Nineties.
Would go to the gig listings & ads first to find out what bands were touring so
that I could get tickets sorted. Some great interviews & writing that informed a
teenager both culturally & politically during the Thatcher era. Favourite writer was
Steven Wells with his caustic sense of humour.

By the mid nineties I would occasionally buy the NME but would mostly get my
music news from the monthly magazines like Select & Uncut. This was partly due
to the free cd that came with each issue. When I did buy a copy of NME I noticed
articles were shorter and more vapid to what I was used to, especially after it
went to a glossy format.

I realised I was no longer their target audience and now I rarely read a music mag.

Also things like FHM, Loaded, Nuts and as a kid, Match.

Have little disposable cash, and can't remember the last time I bought a magazine.

It seems like the arse end has gone out of that industry
Still a multimillion pound industry though through ad sakes alone.

Publishers have to be smarter now though. Lads mags got found out and didn't change, but I think their is still a space in the market for a more grown up version that isn't nuts, but isn't GQ.

I adore Q. Over the last 18 months it's had some really good interviews.
