I wouldn't say Butland is the most commanding of his box either. He's pretty much a pure shot stopper. And his distribution is average.

Not too sure he's that bad is he?

Just looked and he played 45 of 46 games this season, 35 of 38 Premier League games last season and he missed 6 months of 2016/17 with a broken ankle.

35/36? He could have easily done a job until later than that though

Fair enough
But dont see why we would sign any keeper for that kind of fee

In the Premier League? Why didn't he then? We had Hennessey who was hardly pulling up trees. So, maybe Guaita has 4 seasons in him, rather than 2, at the top level. Butland would have 10. The point remains about building for the future but I appreciate goalkeeper is not a priority position for us right now so it is unlikely to happen.

No one would still be here in ten years time in this day and age.

That is probably true but there is of course the argument about re-sale value. Butland (if he played well) would still have that in 6 years time whereas Guiata wouldn't.

Thing is. Butland is expensive and not very good

I haven't seen enough of him in the last couple of years to have an informed opinion on him. I know there have been some errors but he did look very good when he was younger.

It's strange how some players, including keepers can suddenly go backwards in their performances. I guess Joe Hart is the most obvious example of that. Although he still had an annoyingly good game against us last season.

Yup - and they let in the fourth least amount of goals in the division despite finishing 16th .

Well worth a punt as an insurance policy, in my opinion, with Jules retiring and should we get big bucks for Wilf . If he gets back to his best, then we will have the best British keeper in Britain & Ireland .

I thought we sorted the goal keeper succession with Perri he’s young and Speroni said he's good, so with a bit of time he should be ready to step up.

We might have done but do you really think that Jules would have said anything other than he's good.

Perri hasn’t played a 1st team game in his career.

He’ll be out on loan next season. Nowhere near ready to be a Number 2 here at the moment.

We have to get realistic of getting him, currently with Guiata and Hennessey as our senior keepers is the best we can hope for and if Guiata was to stay then the keeping situ is sorted.
However if Guiata was to leave that is a very different situation and creates a vacancy for a top class replacement, will that be Butland at the reported 30m fee? i doubt it, why not Begovic still just 31 who is a very good keeper who has simply fallen out with his manager, OR what about Etheridge at Cardiff a keeper i rate highly who proved his quality in a poor team and would look far better with Palace's strong defence in front of him for protection, and possibly either could be bought for around £10/12m is better value for money.

What have his performances been like when you saw him play? He looks like a big lad.
