You see, this is why I don't really warm to Floyd. It's another mid-tempo plodder to me.

A very tongue in cheek comment from Dangermouse as it was really Roger Waters' project and he wrote all the songs. Rick Wright had already left and Gilmour wasn't pleased with the album content.

DSotM still a favourite but for some reason not that keen on 'Money' probably heard it too much outside the album?

I like The Final Cut but have to put away all sharp objects when listening!

An odd little one I like is the compilation album 'Relics' always liked drifting off to 'Cirrus Minor' and getting woken up by 'The Nile Song'.

Yes, indeed. It's the least 'Floyd' Floyd album for me, effectively a Waters solo album in all but name. And if you view it in that context, it's his best.

Now thereís damning with faint praise.

The final cut was a floyd album in name only. Richard wright had already left the band and done it as a paid musician. Gilmour despised it and waters created the whole thing. It's not a bad album by any means but it's only creative which was Roger Waters job but he needed the heart and soul of gilmour and Wright to transcend that creativeness into great music. He got neither and made its listener want to top themselves. When Waters left it went the other way Wright, Gilmour and Mason could still make very good jams but the creative spark was gone and we just had a generic pop band. Excluding High Hopes, keep talking and Sorrow. Learning to fly sounded more like a Duran Duran track then a pink floyd tune.

Plenty of early stuff (From Piper up to Meddle) played by Nick Mason on his Saucerful of Secrets current tour. Really enjoyed it last night.

There's been a decent give away with Classic Rock magazine this month - "The Little Book of Pink Floyd". Some interesting stories in there.

Nope, I'm not buying this, in my book they were easily as sh*t back then.

This is the argument that w*nky NME writers have used since the dawn of time, to justify either their questionable tastes or to 'prove' their hipness.
Nick Drake. Couldn't sell sh*t when he was alive, and is now the best thing since sliced bread.
Tim Buckley. Ditto.
Give it ten years, and the NME will be claiming, in the new post-ironic era, that Girls Aloud were fab.
I once met a rock journalist who hadn't heard of Neil Young.......
Tried to rep but apparently Iíve been coming on to you too often recently.

I only wanted to agree. IGAB was shit then, itís been shit ever since, and will be shit evermore.

Stella please can you post an appreciation guide to like Yes. I loved their album covers but when I listened it seemed all pretentious crap. Just got suckered again btw by a band called utopia strong couple of pre releases that were great. Album arrives, the rest is up it’s own arse bollocks. Loved Floyd, Camel etc but couldn’t get Yes I feel I’m missing something so a start here and end here album playlist would be great.

If you want 3 early ones then The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge, all released in that order. Close to the Edge, prog rock at its greatest.

The Wall for me, one of my favourites of all time and seen it live a couple of times which brings the whole 'show' to life.

As an aside did anyone venture to the V+A museum a couple of years back for their Pink Floyd exhibition; absolutely fascinating clips and memorabilia, you really started to understand that these guys were absolute geniuses (particularly Waters and Gilmour).

I went for Meddle with the haunting Echoes filling the second side and pointing the way to the three great albums that followed (ignoring Obscured by Clouds).
