TBH, I do not know. I am a retired coach driver not a truck driver.

However, I am sure that at Calais, the Border Agency have the right to gain access to every part of every vehicle coming into the UK. And as a driver of an HGV or PSV you are required to complete your own checks prior to arriving at the border. At the risk of a large fine.

Many HGVs have "tilt cords" which is a wire passed all around the trailer secured by padlocks and seals. The idea being that it gives a quick visual check if an attempt has been made to break in. More relevant to curtain siders and non rigid trailers. And the driver obviously has the keys.

I can understand the idea of sealed containers on domestic routes, but do not know how it works at the border. Perhaps someone could enlighten me ?

I did once inadvertantly bring a couple of illegals back !

Most lorries will have seals around them, one of the reason would be to show the trailer has not been broken into.
As said on here, it was a fridge trailer which would be air tight. When we used to ship containers from Zeeburger to Purfleet they were x rayed when loaded. This was a Ro Ro, so not sure if the same happens but would be very surprised if it wasnt.
Also something just isnt right, if he dudnt know why did he stop so close to the port. Also look how he parked the lorry, if you are stopping for the night you dont park like that. I think he pulled over to let them out, saw they were dead and paniced.

Vietnam is a pretty locked down country with something like 1 in 10 of the population working as police informers. If the snakeheads are operating there it’s presumably with the governments knowledge.

Just horrific, just hope they all passed out and hopefully did not suffer a great deal. I can't even imagine.

Interesting and quite long article explains a lot of the background and shows how sophisticated and wide-ranging the people smuggling is.

If a driver picks up a trailer with a seal on, he will check the seal number and security of the seal, this should correspond with the seal number written on the cmr, if it has been changed by anyone other than hmrc or european authority he should remove the seal and check the load, once satisfied he should add a new seal and note it's number on the cmr.

A lorry driver has been charged with the manslaughter of 39 people found dead inside a refrigerated trailer.

Maurice Robinson, 25, was arrested after the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in Grays on Wednesday.

He is further charged with people trafficking, immigration and money laundering offences, Essex Police said.

Thank you I came here to ask the same question. If they can afford 30k why are they leaving but you just answered my question.

Long story but I got my decompression wrong coming up from a deep dive and had to sit and wait before surfacing. As a result of my miscalculation I had sod all air left for my final stop before surfacing. That memory of trying to draw air into empty lungs under pressure, knowing full well there was little left, was pretty scary. At any point I could have taken the risk of DCS and just surfaced.

Unless the refrigeration was on, Iíd suggest, from personal experience, they suffered horribly as the oxygen ran out.
