I read via Kindle... The word 'midges' was used a few times with only one letter's difference. That single letter produced a whole different word Did your version have the same typo, or is that the actual word Americans use? Surely not.

I've been reading "Another Country", by James Baldwin. I vaguely remember a film about floppy haired ponces in the 1920s which went by the same name, and had resisted picking the book up for this reason. It has nothing to do with the film..... though it would probably make a great film. It is quite beautifully written and I wondered a mite about why he is not a better known writer - he's far better than Mailer, for example. But I think perhaps it has to do with the amount of gay sex in his books - although it's pretty tangential here.
Anyway, read it, it's set in the New York early and bohemian 60s, and it's a remarkable book.

He's quite well known these days following that Samuel L Jackson-narrated documentary and the If Beale Street Could Talk film (sadly not about Dave Campbell's Eastenders impression).

I downloaded this a few days ago on audible. Never had an audible book before.
Looking forward to starting it now.

Not sure about 'not a better known writer'. He's one of the giants of the 20th Century.
Check out his two essays published as 'Fire Next Time'. A remarkable author.
His work on racism, segregation, social and gay rights was revolutionary.

On a similar tip, you might like Ralph Ellison's 'Invisible Man'.
I would also recommend 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X'.
