Either introduce the technology or stop the farcical post match interviews with managers who generally have had the benefit of technology but bring the game into disrepute if they say anything. As it stands the referees are being hung out to dry but are above reproach at the risk of a fine.

Makes no sense.

Not if a 4th or 5th official could relay the information to the ref (like in rugby) to enable the ref to make the final decision in play. That would assist not undermine.

There's been quite a few dodgy handball decisions given/not given recently too. A 2nd ref watching on cameras could help the ref there to give/not give them. Apparently its ok to stick your arm out if you're not facing the play now.

Atkinson's next game as referee is Southampton vs Palace by the way.

Basic mistakes are being made week in week out with no repercussions. Something has to change. I'd start with the FA.
From the replays I've seen I could understand a ref not giving a red. It looks like he's got the ball under possession, is playing a pass and his leg follows through into matic who is mid tackle

It's not over the ball, it's not two footed and it doesn't look like he's out of control when he starts the action - which by the rules of the game are three key criteria in deciding if it's dangerous play and a red.

For me it's only a red if you deem it deliberate by Barnes and the ref who was on the pitch at the time about 10 yards away had the best view to make that call.

He was as far offside as Ozil was onside about 40 minutes earlier when he slotted the ball home only to be given offside. This of course has been suitably 'ignored' by those wishing to blame the officials for the defeat rather than praising what was a great display by Palace. 53% possession. nearly twice as many shots, Giroud likening the Arsenal experience to the Alamo lost in a morass of erroneous moaning.

In rugby its there to help the referee. Confirm tries scored and the check the phases of play leading to the try to see if they missed any forward passes, cross over play, etc.

Goal line technology is proven to be working. Why not something similar for off-side and penalty decisions?

Think he was pretty spot on.

Football is played at fast pace, on often slippery surfaces and you can't slow it down to second by second freeze frame and keep the same nature of the sport and competition. No doubt the contact made doesn't look pretty but I'd be livid if Barnes pulled out of making the pass in that situation.

I've seen tv pundits arguing over whether a player should be offside or not as he was marginally offside by centremeters. Is that really in the spirit of the game?

It's ignored because the whistle blew and everyone stopped, including Ozil who nochanently passed it into the net anyway. Jules stood up and looked toward the ref, he wasn't even watching Ozil after the whistle. Had the whistle not gone there was no certainty of a goal at all.

My proposal for video technology in football:

Each team gets two challenges per game, which the manager uses by signalling to the video ref in the stand.
The video ref then reviews the incident on his monitor, while play continues as normal.

If the video ref is 100% certain, then he has executive power to overturn the decision within 45 seconds of it occurring. If he cannot be certain within that time frame, the origin decision stands.

All the while, play continues as normal, so there is no disruption. And many decisions would be overturned within seconds (think Frank Lampard vs Germany, or Thierry Henry vs Ireland; we could be 100% certain about those two within seconds).

If you're overturning a goal or a penalty, play would have stopped anyway. The worst case scenario is that a goal is scored whilst a decision is being challenged, but in that case you just bring the play back.

Curious to know if there would be any objections to this (beyond simply "technology has no place in football").

In light of that "totally and utterly inept" seems harsh.

Not a great argument for having technology.

One thing I didn't like about watching Wales v England (a particularly tight game) the other day was how their referees hide behind technology on all big decisions. Even when a decision looked straight forward they just referred it to the video ref anyway. What's the point of having a ref at all ?

Was quite frustrating to watch, and did not help the game flow at all.

So that means it can be ignored in terms of errors by officials?

It's a game of opinions. It's not as black and white as goal line technology.

Look at MOTD - some will say fantastic tackle, some will say it's a red card.

That's the reason for me it won't work. Goal line technology is enough.

They're a bigger and better club than us, as much as I hate to say it. We might have 20,000 plastic supporters to fill our stadium at the moment, but when their enthusiasm fizzles out we will have nothing over Palace. I actually hope they go up now just so we don't have to go through two more humiliations next season.
