I don’t think he was hopeless, but the goal aside, he was poor. I imagine he got MOM because he got the goal in a game that looked like it had 0-0 written all over it. Had Benteke missed that free header in the first half, he would have been ripped apart for it. It was a lovely finish from Alex, but against a championship second string defence, he did not set the world alight. If you took away the goal, his performance was nowhere near better than what Benteke has done this season.

But that's the actual point, he SCORED. He did his most important job as a striker.

I didn't manage to watch the whole game and I'm pleased for him to get the goal, but let's be honest it wasn't a good finish and was an atrocious piece of goalkeeping.

Odd that people are so keen to write this lad off after he scores on his first game as striker. Benteke would have skied it.

In the second half we were pressurising and bombarding them with so many attacks that eventually their keeper was bound to drop a bollock of some sort.

Calvin Andrew, Wayne Andrews, Ade Akinbiyi, Michele Padovano, they all scored for palace, doesn’t mean they were worthy first choice starters. Hell, I have a feeling Jordan Mutch scored in a cup game for us somewhere, but no way would anyone start him!! Hopefully Alex will kick on, it will get him going and he bags a ton of goals. But people are letting that strike, coupled with their despisal of Benteke, cloud their judgement. We haven’t seen Ayew yet, but as it stands we are just trying to pick from two strikers who aren’t currently the answer to what we need up front

I don’t think they would be if we were just looking at this as him getting his first goal and making some progression. The problem is that some are so desperate to drop Benteke that they are over hyping tonight’s performance and perhaps pushing Alex to something that he isn’t yet, which will naturally garner a reaction from those who disagree

He scored a very good goal against Chelsea too. There is no doubt he is a better finisher than Benteke.

I like him.

Very much a rough diamond, and you would like to see him chase with more intensity when given cameos, but that's not the way we play.

Good feet, all the physical attributes, seems to have a good mentality. Given time, Roy can help him to realise that potential.

Agree - not sure what has happened at Palace in recent years. Young talent seems to get the treatment until they eventually turn opinions around. I seem to remember that we used to give youngsters a bit of room to prove themselves before laying into them. The guy did OK, he took his goal well and worked at his game. Writing him off as some seem determined to do is just ridiculous at 22.

It's the Premier League effect on our fanbase. Unless a player arrives with a grossly inflated reputation he isn't given the time of day.

No one can say what this kid will turn out to be. Right or wrong, he's been given very few minutes up front.

But for the doom merchants; any of you remember how long it took AJ to get going? I seem to remember him doing all right in the end. Could have sworn he got a few here and there...

Spot on - it’s early days for Sorloth. Nobody’s saying that he’s a world beater but What’s with all the negativity towards him.
Get behind the kid and let’s see how he develops!

He almost smiled on the Palace TV interview!

As an aside, a very honest interview with Ryan Innis on there also. Might be worth its own thread.
