The worst one for me was the FA Cup 6th round in 1976. Didn't get there until nearly half time (not their fault) only to find "our" terrace unsegregated and swarming with drunken Mackems intent on doing us harm. Big Mal had apparently been winding them up before kick-off. Alan Whittle's winner only riled them even more and we literally took out lives in our hands on the walk back to the station. I got separated from others and was making my way back in silence, surrounded by the threatening Sunderland lot, not daring to look at anyone. Then I was aware of someone following me closely. They walked alongside me and said, in a London accent, "You're Palace, aren't you". I nodded. "So am I", he said, and somehow we got back to the station in one piece. The ever-considerate Mackems even added air-conditioning to our trains for the journey home. The most scared I have ever been at a football match, including Leeds and Scumwall. Tainted me for life.

Good riddance, I say. Enjoy Division 3 with Charlton.

Crazy what's happened. And yet somehow predictable.

A Mackem friend of mine said the whole club behind the scenes was a shambles and no manager was ever going to save them.

Excellent! Well done for re-finding that. What a tool. Only a shame that Henderson isn't still there.

it's been coming for a long time - there's stack loads of stuff out there about how awful the Sunderland is. Even Di Canio knew it.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Not content with dubbing some of his former Sunderland players "cowards", Paolo Di Canio has singled out Lee Cattermole, Phil Bardsley, John O'Shea and Steven Fletcher for further criticism.

Cattermole's return to the first team fold coincided with the players' revolt that unseated Di Canio from the manager's chair at the Stadium of Light in September, while Bardsley crossed him on a couple of well documented occasions.

Both players have been rehabilitated under Gus Poyet – with Bardsley's place at right-back seeming slightly more secure than Cattermole's midfield berth – and both have played key parts in helping Sunderland reach the League Cup final.

Di Canio, though, clearly felt they were beyond redemption. "Those two players [Cattermole and Bardsley] were rotten," he said. "The most unprofessional players I ever worked with. What Bardsley has done in the last year speaks volumes. Photos of him lying on the floor in a casino covered by £50 notes and laughing at the team losing on the opening day, that's public. It's no surprise these players were kicked out of my plans. The reason Sunderland stayed up at the end of last season was because Cattermole was injured and Bardsley played very little."

Di Canio believes Sunderland are deeply embroiled in another relegation battle partly because of their "weak" mentality and he used the term two-faced to describe his former captain, O'Shea.

As we're having a dig at Sunderland today, To view the link you have to Register or Login is worth remembering. Not a patch on volt's masterpiece but a good effort nonetheless.

“There’s something inside Sunderland, something at its very core,” he says. “It’s hard to explain but there’s a way of life, something deep down, that makes it difficult to fulfil its potential. Niall Quinn criticised me for saying so but later talked about ‘gremlins’; then Paulo Di Canio talked about that moment when you get your head above the parapet and … bang! There’s something there, something I couldn’t find. If I knew what it was I’d say but I don’t. But it’s there and needs to be changed at the root.

I have to say "davech" i was at that match with friends and thankfully did not experience any problems, also we were the lucky ones that got into the stadium for the start of the game unlike some who did not get there until nearly half time, sorry to hear about your experience.
Also to share another time when i travelled to Sunderland cant think of the year, but it was with Big Mal and Roy Barry was captain and we drew 0-0. Anyway i travelled up there from Kenley by myself, and actually wore my Palace scarf and as i did not know the way to Roker Park so asked directions from a group of their fans (could not understand a word they were saying in their lingo) but never experienced any trouble/problems, so maybe i was lucky compared to what you experienced.
The Leeds experience was hell in 1976, Millwall need i say anymore? and strangely the worst i found was Stoke City fans back in day, thankfully those shameful days are long gone.

Leeds was also an experience, but a lot funnier (for me). I won't bore everyone with that one as well - probably belongs in Memory Lane.

They can install rail seats with the Prem parachute money they are still getting if they want.

We are British. And Proud. And regardless of geography. Aren't we? Or have I missed something.

sunderland are a big club with lots of history and unfortunately they have been managed badly. It could so easily have been Palace too - it almost was at one point or many points since '76 as I am sure that you are aware.

So be grateful and also respectful that's all I say. After 77-78 Palace have not been out of the top two divisions. Better than man city and lids lids lids. Amazing feat in my opinion and you could have quite easily been born in the North supporting accrington stanley or some shit like that.

They are a very well supported club tbf. If they are in the top two next season they will still get 25,000-35,000 and possibly more. We would never get 25,000 regularly doing well in The Champ even.
