I'm a bit hazy on the process, but I think the Returning Officer has to check with the candidates' agents at the end of the count whether or not the Agent accepts spoilt ballots. The agents can protest, but ultimately the RO's decision is final.

An agent would have been up since 4am on polling day. They will have been getting out the vote all day long, then straight off to the count, where you require another several hours of laser focus whilst the boxes are counted. By the time results are being finalised they will likely have been up for 24 hours - and it's a manic, hectic, sweaty, exhausting 24 hours. If you've just lost by a few hundred votes, you may not be particularly inclined to have a row with the RO about the merits of inclusion of one dodgy ballot.

Were they. That would be against the law. They can ask but they should tell you its your choice. Also its only relevant if youve been canvassd by a party. They just want to know that there likely supporters are getting out to vote

Any link?

I've been a teller to a deputy returning officer and a candidate on the other side of the fence as it were. That doesn't sound right.

Really?

Almost half the electorate voted to remain.

You think it unreasonable to ask why Lib Dems and Greens getting 19% of councillors can be defined as a strong statement for remain?

The numbers of 'others' a large number of which will be independents has gained almost as many seats in number as the Lib Dems and as a 5 of formerly held seats a greater improvement.

Is this election a strong statement that local politics should be fought away from the big parties?

Love that poll here, depicting labour with a blue bar and the Torie with a redbar. Were voters confused?

No but once again a BBS political poll shows how far left of the general population the BBS yet the majority deny it every time. (Albeit this poll is a much smaller sample than usual)

That cant be denied Brett

All I would say is that a lot of people, understandably, don't know what is a spoilt ballot or not. It's got to be a cross in the box - helpful for counting but not necessarily needed for the paper to count. And others things can be written on it.

If he had written Brexit without an arrow, that would no doubt be spolit. But an arrow could be deemed a vote. I wouldn't bemoan the loss of democracy over the call. Once noticed, the candidates would haven been involved. Perhaps they were just knackered and didn't really want the job.

But we are not comparing with the general population - we are comparing with a mainly London, generally working class/lower middle class background with not that many really old voters. It may not be that unrepresentative of that demographic

I am just enjoying the fact that Mole Valley has gone LibDem and the Guildford Tories (where all kinds of odd things seemed to be happening with developers and allowed developments way over the required number in the greenbelt) have been pretty wiped out.
