49. What if the team and their drafted player can't agree to a contract? What options does the player have? How long does the team keep his draft rights?

The player's options are limited. What happens depends on a number of factors:
  • If the player is already under contract to, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player's draft rights for one year after the player's obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in team salary during the regular season while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.
  • If the player goes on to play college ball after he was drafted, then the team retains the player's draft rights until one year following the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2012 and he returns to college and plays intercollegiate basketball, then they retain his draft rights until the 2015 draft. Note that the NCAA rules state that players lose their NCAA eligibility if they are drafted, so the player currently cannot return or go on to play college ball. This rule exists in the CBA in the event the NCAA rules ever change.
  • If the player was eligible to play in college before he was drafted but does not go on to play college basketball, then the team retains the player's draft rights until the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2012 and he does not return to college and play intercollegiate basketball, they retain his draft rights until the 2014 draft.
  • For all other players, the team retains the player's draft rights until the date of the next draft.

In any of the above cases, if the team does not sign the player in the allotted time, the player can enter the next draft. If the team that selects the player in the next draft doesn't sign him either, he becomes a rookie free agent on the date of the following draft.

When a team signs a first round draft pick within three years after he is drafted, they use the salary scale for the year in which he signs (usually the player signs in the same year he is drafted). After three years they have the option of either using the salary scale or signing him as if he was a free agent -- using their cap room or any available exception, with the standard raises. They can only do the latter if the player did not play intercollegiately in the interim. Such a contract must be for at least three seasons, and the salary in the first season must be greater than 120% of the applicable rookie scale amount.

Big news!!!

Board of Governors approves Charlotte's name change

Charlotte is the home of the Hornets once again. The NBA unanimously approved Charlotte's nickname change from Bobcats to Hornets on Thursday at the league's Board of Governors meeting. The original Hornets built a supportive fan base in Charlotte from the time they entered the league in 1988 until they moved to New Orleans in 2002. But the new owners in New Orleans have changed the team's name to the Pelicans. That opened the door for owner Michael Jordan to bring the Hornets name back to Charlotte. The change will take place after the 2013-14 season. "We're thrilled to bring back the Hornets to Charlotte and the Carolinas," Jordan said in a statement issued by the team. "The passion and enthusiasm around this name change by fans in this market has been unmatched. They overwhelmingly told us what they wanted, we listened and we couldn't be happier with the Board of Governors' approval of the name change. With the young team we are developing on the court, the direction of our business and the return of the Hornets name, we are extremely excited about our future. The buzz is back!" The city, and the franchise, has been looking for a fresh start. The Hornets were a ticket-selling powerhouse for years, leading the league in attendance eight times and selling out 364 straight games in their turquoise, white and purple uniforms. The city bonded with a charismatic team that included such as stars Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson and fan favorite Muggsy Bogues. But the franchise fell on hard times under previous owner George Shinn, who took to the team, and the Hornets name, to New Orleans. The NBA brought an expansion team back to Charlotte two years later, a team nicknamed the Bobcats in part due to founding owner Bob Johnson's name. The brand never resonated with the people the way the Hornets did, in large part because the team only has had one winning season and one playoff appearance in its first nine years of existence. The Bobcats, with their nondescript orange and grey color scheme, won just seven games two years ago and only 21 last season. So they are hoping the energy brought by the name change, even if it will take another year to set in, will somehow help galvanize a young team. "We want to reach back and grab some of that equity that the Hornets earned in our community," Charlotte COO Fred Whitfield said. "They did a lot of great things off the court. They were involved in the community. They became very accessible to the Charlotte fans and citizens of Charlotte. We want to reach back and grab some heritage and use it as we move forward to build a brand with our young team that continues to improve." The Bobcats' website hailed the return of "Buzz City" and team officials said 2,000 season-ticket holders turned out at a downtown party that turned into a celebration of the name change. Bogues and other former Hornets including Rex Chapman, Kelly Tripucka, Dell Curry and Kendall Gill attended as well. Commissioner David Stern said that he had heard pleas from Charlotte basketball fans for years to give them back the Hornets nickname, and he initially brushed those aside with a "get over it" view of the complaining. In time, however, he came to understand how important the name was to the community. "It stayed there, bubbling below the surface, and there is something to it," Stern said. "I think that the team is going to receive support from fans who think that this is a step in the direction that the fans have been asking for, and this is an attempt to both satisfy the fans and its accompanied by a kind of very specific market research that allows the Hornets to say, yes, this is what the market is asking for and they're very much serving their market by making this change."

D-Wade's ex is crazy!

And he got custody of the kids. That tells you something right there.

Now I know why it took so long for Derrick Rose to come back from his knee injury, he's got brain damage too.

Quote:
When asked by CNN's Pedro Pinto in an interview who the best player in the NBA is right now, the former MVP [Rose] did not hesitate with his answer.

"Derrick Rose," the 24-year-old said confidently.

So Greg Oden is going to Miami... As the article says pretty much last chance saloon for Oden and his knees. Must be tough (despite all the money he's earned for not playing much), especially given this was the guy taken Number 1 overall in a draft that featured Kevin Durant.

Oden giving NBA one more try, choosing to sign with Heat

Former No. 1 pick Greg Oden will give it one more try in the NBA. Oden chose the Miami Heat Friday, one of six teams that had been on his list of finalists to try and make his return from injuries that have limited him to exactly one full season's worth of games, 82, in six seasons. Oden had been working out for several teams for the last couple of weeks, trying to convince teams that he could potentially return to the form that made him the top pick of the 2007 Draft. Oden chose Miami over five other teams vying for his services: Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, Sacramento and San Antonio. Since being waived by Portland in March 2012, Oden has spent much of his time rehabbing in Ohio, where he starred in one season at Ohio State. ESPN.com first reported Oden's agreement with Miami. The Heat will have the luxury of bringing Oden back to form slowly. Miami re-signed veteran center Chris Andersen earlier this month to back up starting center Chris Bosh, so Oden will not be needed at the start of next season as he tries to get back in game shape. The 25-year-old Oden has been star-crossed ever since the Blazers took him first overall in 2007, a pick ahead of Kevin Durant, who went to the then-Seattle SuperSonics. The two have been linked ever since, with Durant turning into a superstar, leading the now Oklahoma City Thunder to the Finals in 2012, while Oden has been besieged by injuries. Oden had been injured in his only season in college, at Ohio State, tearing a ligament in his wrist that required surgery, keeping him from making his college debut until December. Essentially playing one-handed for much of the season, he was an AP first-team All-America, and led the Buckeyes to the national championship game, where he dominated future pros Joakim Noah and Al Horford. But Noah's and Horford's Florida team nonetheless beat Ohio State for the national title. Oden's rookie season in Portland ended before it began, when he underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee in September 2007. The Blazers were confident that Oden would make a complete recovery and return for the 2008-09 season. And he played well most of what was his "rookie" season, averaging 8.9 points and 7 rebounds in 61 games -- though he missed three weeks after chipping his left patella in February 2009. Oden was occasionally dominant the first month of the 2009-10 season, posting five double-doubles, including 13 points and 20 rebounds against Miami in November. But on December 6, 2009, he fractured his left patella in a game against Houston, a gruesome, freak "explosion" injury that occurred when Oden was jumping, and didn't come in contact with anyone. Of course, he missed the rest of that season. Oden spent almost a year trying to rehab that injury, but when he ramped up his physical activities before the start of the 2010-11 season, he knees gave out on him again. Swelling in his left knee after a pregame workout in November, 2010, led to an MRI that showed damaged cartilage in his left knee, which required microfracture surgery on that knee. Oden, again, missed the entire season. And he missed the following season as well, when his right knee, which had been relatively stable since the initial microfracture surgery in 2007, began acting up again. He underwent arthroscopic surgery in February 2012 to clean out debris in that knee. The Blazers had tried everything to try and figure out why Oden's knees couldn't seem to support him. But, finally, they gave up on him, adding him to the unhappy list of big men that were cut down by injuries there, including Bill Walton and Sam Bowie.

Number 33 is Ryan Andersen (ex Orlando Magic), not a clue who number 14 is though.

Heard of micro fracture surgery but never really looked it up before. Interesting stuff. It seems if it works then it can be pretty effective, but if not then it can be quite limiting. Players like Tracy McGrady, Amar'e Stoudemire have had it and suffered from a loss of speed, jumping ability and general stiffness in their knees. Tough to see Oden ever being fully effective having had two failed micro fracture surgeries... One on each knee.

The surgery is performed by arthroscopy, after the joint is cleaned of calcified cartilage. Through use of an awl, the surgeon creates tiny fractures in the subchondral bone plate. Blood and bone marrow (which contains stem cells) seep out of the fractures, creating a blood clot that releases cartilage-building cells. The microfractures are treated as an injury by the body, which is why the surgery results in new, replacement cartilage. The procedure is less effective in treating older patients, overweight patients, or a cartilage lesion larger than 2.5 cm. Further on, chances are high that after only 1 or 2 years of the surgery symptoms start to return as the fibrocartilage wears away, forcing the patient to reengage in articular cartilage repair.

The effectiveness of cartilage growth after microfracture surgery is thought to be dependent on the patient's bone marrow stem cell population and some think increasing the number of stem cells increases the chances of success. A couple of physicians are promoting an alternative treatment implanting autologous mesenchymal stem cells directly into the cartilage defect, without having to penetrate the subchondral bone.

Orlando Magic waive Al Harrington
Being waived by a team can be a crushing moment.

But it wasn’t traumatic for Al Harrington.

In a long-awaited move to save money and free up playing time for their young players, the Orlando Magic waived the veteran forward on Friday afternoon.

Harrington will become a free agent if no team claims him by Sunday afternoon.

“I think to accomplish what I’m trying to accomplish, proving that I can still play and help, I’ve got to go to a situation where I’m going to play,” Harrington said in a phone interview Friday night.

“I don’t mind competing for minutes, but I at least need to know that I’ll at least have an opportunity to play. And I really want to win. I want to play on a team that’s playoff-ready, playoff-bound, and we can go out and try to shock the world.”

Harrington, 33, didn’t fit into the rebuilding Magic’s long-range plans.

On his current contract, about $3.57 million of his $7.15 million salary for the upcoming season is guaranteed, while $3.8 million of his $7.6 million salary for the 2014-15 season is guaranteed.

The Magic did not reach a buyout agreement with him.

So, when he clears waivers, the Magic will be obligated to pay only the guaranteed amounts, minus what is known as a “setoff” figure of about $300,000 in each season if Harrington signs with a team for the veteran’s minimum.

Only the guaranteed amounts, with the setoff figure subtracted, will count toward the Magic’s salary-cap totals for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

The Magic now have 14 players under contract for the upcoming season, a total that doesn't include second-round draft pick Romero Osby.

The Magic acquired Harrington, Arron Afflalo, Maurice Harkless, Nik Vucevic, Josh McRoberts, Christian Eyenga and future draft picks in last August’s four-team, 12-player trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers.

At the time, Harrington was recovering from a staph infection in his right knee, and he didn't make his Magic debut until late February. He appeared in a total of 10 games and averaged 5.1 points and 2.7 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game.

Harrington, who was required to wear a knee brace, never quite felt comfortable.

“That brace, it slowed me down,” he said. “It made me look bad. I had never played with a brace or anything like that.”

Magic officials chose not to play Harrington during the season’s final weeks in order to allocate playing time to their young players.

Harrington expected the Magic to waive him this offseason.

When he becomes a free agent, he could draw some interest from contending teams that want a 6-foot-9 forward who can stretch the court and provide veteran leadership.

Harrington, who thanked Magic fans and coaches and training staff over his Instagram account Friday, said he has been working out five or six days a week since late April and has lost about 30 pounds.

On Friday, Harrington played in a pickup game alongside Portland Trail Blazers wing Wesley Matthews, and Harrington recalled that Matthews told him, “I haven’t seen you play like that since you played for the Knicks.”

In the year ahead, Harrington will have a chance to prove it.

“I’m only 33,” Harrington said. “It just fuels me to work. When you guys get a chance to see me, you’re going to be surprised. I’ve been putting in the work.”

In a bid to increase sales of NBA jerseys, the league has announced that more teams will wear experimental “short-sleeve” uniforms next season.

An NBA source reportedly told Darren Rovell that “as many as five teams” will adopt a short-sleeve jersey as an alternate uniform for the 2013-2014 NBA season, ESPN reports. The five teams will reportedly wear the alternate jerseys for as many as 12 games during the season.

“We are interested in doing more short-sleeve jerseys when it makes sense,” Patrik Nilsson, president of Adidas North America, told ESPN. Adidas is the company responsible for the production of NBA uniforms.

On Wednesday, Nilsson added that Adidas hopes to concurrently increase the popularity of its jerseys while developing an innovative game uniform for NBA players, ESPN reports. While every NBA team was given the option of adding a short-sleeve jersey, the league has yet to identify which teams have decided to do so.

Sal LaRocca, the NBA’s executive vice president of global merchandizing, claims that the short-sleeve jersey was meant to offer a new uniform option to consumers, though the new design is not expected to outsell traditional tank-top jerseys. “We know that more men are comfortable wearing T-shirts than tank tops,” LaRocca told ESPN. “So the idea that part of our consumer base would be interested in wearing a jersey with sleeves makes sense."

During the 2012-2013 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors became the first franchise to adopt the short-sleeve jersey, wearing the innovative design for three games. However, the look didn’t necessarily meet the approval of Warriors star Stephen Curry, who called the uniforms “ugly.”

“You’re on national TV, NBATV, wearing our ugly jerseys,” Curry told reporters after the short-sleeve look’s February debut, according to Sports Illustrated. “I shouldn’t have said that [about the jerseys], but it’s just one of those things where there’s a lot of attention on us, and we didn’t show. Regardless of how NBA players feel about the new look, fans can expect to see a lot more of it next season

The short-sleeve jerseys intrigue me, Harrison Barnes said he doesn't mind them. A friend of mine said Roy Hibbert had tweeted his opinion about them which was fairly negative, before it apparently being announced that the Pacers would be one of the teams to try them. I'm not sure if this is true considering what the article says.

Harrington being waived for Magic is a sensible move too, focusing everything towards the 2014 draft and free agents for that year. Bleacher Report seems to reckon we'll be in for one of LeBron, Wade, Bosh or Anthony, but whether that happens or not is another matter.

We could be in for them but whether we get one is another thing entirely. I could see LeBron or Melo but I don't see Wade or Bosh as fits in our roster.

I am not sure what to make of the short sleeve jerseys, they just feel un natural. Of course if the Magic ever have one I will probably buy it as I haven't bought a Magic jersey since the Black Alternate came out about November 2011.

I am not even sure why the NBA / Adidas feel the need for them either?

On the Jersey / Uniform note when Orlando play a game on Xmas Day they will likely wear one of those Monocolour jerseys like the teams wore last year, so I will have to try pick one of those up.

Some people are privileged with a gift in life and time and time again they manage to f**k it up.

Drugs found on Suns' Beasley during arrest

Scottsdale police have arrested Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley after finding suspected marijuana in his car. Officer David Pubins says Beasley was arrested early Tuesday morning following a traffic stop. Pubins says an officer found three cigarettes suspected to contain marijuana in Beasley's Mercedes after smelling marijuana during the stop. Pubins says Beasley was released after being cited for investigation of one felony count each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to Pubins, court proceedings in the case will begin once results of lab tests are available. Beasley was Phoenix's biggest offseason acquisition in 2012 after signing a three-year contract. He was the No. 2 overall pick of the 2008 draft.

Dear All,

Are we going to do an NBA Fantasy League this season? Probably after it never happened last season, best we discuss at an early stage this time.

Muhammad sent home from rookie transition program

Minnesota Timberwolves President Flip Saunders says the team "fully supports" the decision to send first-round draft Shabazz Muhammad home from the NBA's rookie transition program due to a rules violation. Muhammad was sent home after bringing a female visitor to his hotel room Tuesday night. Players are required to get approval for guests from program officials. Muhammad also will be fined for the infraction, which was first reported by USA Today. He will have to go through the program again next summer. Muhammad was chosen 14th overall by the Timberwolves in June after one season at UCLA. The rookie transition program is a four-day seminar that is held to help teach young players about making the jump from college, or overseas, to the NBA.
