Danny Cowley

As a club we really need to start looking to the future.
Despite how great a job Roy has done under the restraints he is still out of the contract at the end of this season and a parting of the ways would be in the best interests of all parties now whether it's now or the end of the season.

Before it's too late though surely we need to be sounding out Danny Cowley and his management team from Lincoln. Performing absolute miracles there's and it can't go unnoticed much longer. He deserves a chance at a team in the top league and would love to see us give him that opportunity. Even if it was announced that he would join in the summer we can then all get behind Roy and ultimately thank him for the job he has done, but Danny Cowley for me is the kind of manager who could be a great fit for Palace.

Let's act now before it's too late!

We will only go for an experienced British PL Manager. Not many left around - think only Moyes left - oh dear that might be a bit awkward with Wilf.

On a serious note let’s hope Roy turns it around but we do need a proper succession plan.

Experience counts for an awful lot in the premier league when you’re a club like Palace just trying to survive in it. That’s doesn’t mean sounding out someone like Ron Atkinson to take over from Roy, but you need someone who knows the league well and can set up the team to make it hard to beat. Pullis and big Sam were top of their game in that respect and a great fit for this club. If the club can hold its ground in the league this season (looking like a challenge from the early weeks!!) and Roy’s time is up, Sean Dyche is the obvious successor

You'll get shot down in flames for suggesting Dyche on here.

He'd certainly utilise our squad better than it is being used now

Raffa would employ a back 3 , our greatest strength perhaps Tomkins, Cahill and Sakho , get Kouyate in midfield and Wickham or Benteke up front and practice corners and free kicks like hell

I'd take a different take on this. Like others have said, taking him on in a top flight relegation battle would be a huge risk, and it's a big ask of someone who had never even managed in League 1 before this season and who never played the game professionally. It's possible that the bloke is the next Arsene Wenger of course, but bringing him in would be a huge risk.

Where he would be my top choice, would be if we got relegated. If that happened, I would really hope that rather than betting the farm on a quick return (look where that got Bolton), we'd have a big clear out of the higher earners, and look to rebuild based on younger players with a brief to get back up in a few years.

I think that assuming he continues to do well at Lincoln, he'd be perfect for that brief. With a full year in League 1, he'd only be stepping up one division, and with well managed expectations, could be given time to build something. That could work very well in the longer term imho, but given that finding out would involve relegation, with a bit of luck we'll never know

The more I read into Cowley the more I think I want him to be Hodgsons successor. Of course it's a gamble, any manager is. But the firefighter approach needs to change and Cowley listening to him does seem to be very tactically aware.

What funds?

"Baldrick, go forth into the streets and let it be known that Edmund Blackadder wishes to sell his house. Percy, just go forth into the streets."

Every chance if we were to be relegated that we would be in teh same division as Lincoln next year.

Cowley's record:
Concord Rangers
1st season - Promoted
2nd season - Play-offs
3rd season - Promoted via play-offs
4th season - 8th place
5th season - 14th place
6th season - Promoted through play-offs
7th season - 7th in National League south

Joined Braintree in National League who had finished midtable
1st season - play-offs losing to eventual winners Grimsby

Moved to Lincoln who had finished midtable in National League
1st season - Won the league
2nd season - League 2 Play-offs
3rd season - Won the League
4th season - Currently in the top few places in League 1

In 12 seasons there has been just 1 where he has not improved the clubs league placing.

I agree with the OP that it is only a matter of time before clubs higher up the leagues start taking a look and he has done a very similar job as Potter did abroad but through the league sin this country.

Would be top of my wish-list now too.

Any particular reason why you think he'd be a success in the PL rather than a Paul Ince or Steve Cotterill style failure?

When the Yanks sell, you would hope the new owners will have deep(er) pockets

He comes across as a good tactician who works out how to get the best out of the players he has at his disposal rather than wedded to a style of play. He is also not used to spending money so unlikely to come in demanding massive war chests.

The premier league would be a significant step up, particuarly in terms of the kind of playing style we adopt and play against. If Roy wants to put his feet up at the end of the season I wonder whether we could employ him in a kind of consultancy role (with a fancy title 'First team director' or something). That way he can offer advice to a new 'up and coming' manager such as Cowely and, if it all goes horribly wrong, step in to sort it out as he did after the FdB debacle.

The problem with Premier League players is that the manager needs them more than they need the manager, while a lower-division manager has the power to decide whether you get a contract next year and can continue to pay your mortgage. Even if you don't like the manager, if you don't play for him then your lovely four bedroom house is at risk.

This lot are quite happy to perform when they feel like it, even for a hugely experienced and respected manager like Hodgson. De Boer's name bought him about two weeks before the players made it fairly clear they weren't having it.

My fear is if a football 'outsider' like Cowley does something weird or that they don't like in the first few weeks and he doesn't even have a pedigree to point to, they'll do their best to get him out too. Still, there aren't many obvious alternatives.

Experience really doesn't mean much at all if you look at the evidence. After all, how did Pulis, Allardyce and Dyche get their seasons of PL experience? Because the clubs they got promoted trusted them. And in the case of Stoke and Bolton it was managers with previous experience that ultimately got them relegated.

Same true of other clubs that stayed up for a while like Swansea (Rogers) and Bournemouth. Managers that established them in PL had no prior experience.

Just have a look at the last couple of seasons. Of the 4 promoted clubs that stayed up at least one season, 2 had managers with PL experience (Rafa and Hughton) and 2 didn't (Wagner, Nuno). Both promoted clubs relegated straight away had managers with PL experience (Warnock, Jokanovic/Ranieri).

Or the weekend. Hodgson out-managed by Wilder, Bruce outdone by Farke.

WBA had two managers with extensive experience in 17/18 and it was the one with no former full managerial posts that almost kept them up. Southampton last year nearly relegated by a manager with extensive PL experience, saved by one with none.

(In balance, Swansea are also a cautionary tale against constant unorthodox appointments.)

One issue with Cowley is that should he come in do well he will likely then be poached further up the food chain fairly quickly. Unlikely he would stay for a long period IMO.

Dyche would be our logical next step IMO.
