On the head son ! Children banned from heading the ball

A heading ban in football training for children up to the end of primary school has been introduced with immediate effect in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland

The changes stated there would be no heading at all in the 'foundation phase' - primary school children - and a graduated approach to heading in training in Under-12s to Under-16s football.

I think in 20 years heading will be gone.

What is needed is that even in older age groups heading is only allowed after formal training by regulated coaches. Knowing how to head the ball does not come easy but makes a huge diffrrence.

If the science shows a strong causal link between regular childhood heading and neurodegenerative diseases later in life then it seems like the right move. The brain is a fragile thing when all is said and done and we only get a limited number of brain cells.

I agree with wedgetail, and I think adult heading is still probably largely OK, with the right technique and well developed neck muscles.

How will players learn how to head the ball well if they dont start when fairly young. Id like to know if the weight of the ball makes a difference . Anyone under the age of about 55 played with plastic coated balls. It seems to me its the older group whove suffered more. Have I got this wrong?

So if a kid heads the ball in a game is that a free kick in much the same way hand ball would be?

Couldn’t they wear helmets or something? Not making a joke, if it could protect their brain while having them still able to practice headers, it seems an obvious idea.

Five a side rules. Keep the ball below head height. Free kick if it goes over head height.

Interestingly this may mean that English players develop their close control and short passing more than they have done in the past; creating more technical players.

NO - this is only guidence for training. This is only for primary school age, for older ages the coaches are advised to restict heading. I run an U15 team, so we are advised to only pratice heading 1 session a week and the players should do a max of 10 headers in that session.

Guidence from the FA is as follows@

U7, U8, U9, U10, U11 Heading should not be introduced in training sessions
at this age
U12 Heading remains a low priority – 1 session per month
& max 5 headers
U13 Heading remains a low priority – 1 session per week &
max 5 headers
U14,U15, U16 Heading remains a low priority – 1 session per week &
max 10 headers
U18 Heading drills should be reduced as far as possible, taking
into consideration the heading exposure in matches

Heading a football cannot be defended in medical terms but players such as Jeff Astle who used the old leather ball had to contend with a critical difference because when soaked the ball became much heavier than today's ball.

I learned to head a ball from playing in the school playground. Often we had to play with a tennis ball and not a football. You had to focus on the ball when it was crossed in to make sure you used your forehead.

i remember those balls, laces on some of them and they were lethal if you mistimed the header , it was bloody painful. If we were talking about those in this thread i would totally agree , but come on , the balls these days are like ping pong balls , health and safety gawn mad .. What next ? no scrums in rugby in case your hair gets messed up 😁

I think the FA need to get a grip of ball pressures. It seems to me that just because a track pump is relatively more expensive than a standard bicycle pump, the purchaser needn't feel the need at every opportunity to pump up the ball up still more, which is why when you watch an amateur game from the sidelines, no-one's able to control the ball properly because it's so ridiculously hard. I cringe when it so much as touches a player's head.

There has to be a maximum ball pressure, surely.

Law 2 is what you need;

All balls must be:

spherical

made of suitable material

of a circumference of between 68 cm (27 ins) and 70 cm (28 ins)

between 410 g (14 oz) and 450 g (16 oz) in weight at the start of the match

of a pressure equal to 0.6–1.1 atmosphere (600 –1,100 g/cm²) at sea level (8.5lbs/sq in–15.6 lbs/sq in)
