And ESPN+ is broadcasting a nice selection of Championship and League 1 games. $5 a month. Football overload in the US.

Premier league will never have model as you say, IMG do that currently. The other gentlemen is right big internernet companies will run the show. 80% of tv in states is now online. Facebook also just employed head of Eurosport broadcast. Netflix will be also jump into sport as the have a better 4k / HDR platform ready which you need for sport.

It's possible the PL could have its own global rights and distribution model in the future, but then sub-license it out to the streaming giants and/or traditional TV networks. Similar to what Discovery does with Eurosport on Amazon Channels and its Olympic coverage globally.

But it'll no doubt be difficult to implement a live streaming global model. It's one thing Netflix and Amazon doing global video on demand rights deals, but implementing live rights across borders where each country will have varying internet connectivity and technological infrastructure issues is a different matter. In this day and age people won't settle for live streams cutting out or buffering and they expect perfect picture quality.

Sorry they won’t I work in industry. BT SPort is already live stream through net works fine UHD.

look what they did..They created 8 packages for a reason they new this day was coming, wanted other players coming in. They are just and will always be a governing body like FA. The next bidding in 2-3 years will be interesting. Also as before IMG have distribution rights. They do premier league productions which is where player interviews done(some on palace player). IMG studios where SKY do there panel coverage. Then you companies like NEP contracted with OB trucks which do filming/transmission in grounds. The premier league would never take this all over. But a company like AMAZON on the other hand! Wouldn’t surprise if they have there own OB trucks in 5-10 years. There business model is to try and do everything start to finish. There is another option a big football club may tell premier league **** off don’t want your money and produce stream all there shows live pay per play on club website(Man U app on your tv)A US basketball team basically did this. Rumours are Spurs and Facebook had a discussion about something along these lines. I personally think Man U would be only 1 who could pull because World wide audience.

Think we're at cross purposes. By PL I meant the clubs controlling their own content. So I think we're in agreement there. On your BT Sport point I was referring to global pure digital subscription services like Prime Video, not national pay TV operators like BT. Of course BT would have a perfect stream, they have the legacy infrastructure and are only streaming to the UK.

I work in the industry as well and make you right about the rights auction though. But even the PL (the organisation) would have hoped Amazon bid for one of the more lucrative packages.

The likes of Amazon are only doing territorial sports deals at the moment because they know that their ultimate aim of global live distribution is tough to implement technologically. It's why Netflix is sticking to movies and series at the moment. Of course if anyone has the clout to succeed it's Amazon, who can offset the cost against its other business ventures and lax tax regulations.

Look at Eleven Sports in Europe. They're a subscription streaming service with live football rights across different countries. But even they have had to set up linear TV channels in some countries because connectivity and tech infrastructure is limited and pay TV penetration is still high in those nations.

I'm not so sure that the Premier League would never take all that over. They own the core content and the technology for streaming will be a commodity before long, so all they really need to do is figure out is production and the back office admin to sell their digital streaming service (and possibly advertising if relevant).

It won't be an overnight shift to pure digital globally. There will be some interim local broadcast deals, and I can see that maybe they will partner with an existing streaming platform for a time, but I can't see a future where they don't go direct to consumer.

Fantastic news that armchair fatties can thank the EU that they can now pay more because of the EU's ruling on stopping any monopolies.

2012 = legacy, legacy, legacy not knife crime!!

Before the EU it was all with one supplier until its ruling! The EU: helping their mates!

Fair to say this is a trial run for when they eventually scrap the 3pm rule and have all games on TV like NBC do in the US?

So the first batch of Amazon games are this week.

This is what they are going to offer:

Quote:
All 10 Premier League games will be available to watch live this week as Amazon showcase the first set of their estimated £90m deal to screen 20 matches a season for the next three years.

The big draws are expected to be Tottenham's trip to Manchester United on Wednesday, which will mark Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford, as well as the Merseyside derby.

Nine games will be shown on Boxing Day with another on December 27.
Quote:
Can I watch on my TV?

Yes. As well as watching the action on smartphones, tablets and computers, subscribers can beam it to their televisions using their games consoles, or via the Prime Video app on Virgin and BT boxes as well as Amazon's Fire Stick
Quote:
Can I watch two games at once?

You can watch up to three games on different devices at the same time with one Amazon account. If you want to watch all the goals go in, there will also be a separate Goals Centre channel, hosted by Match of the Day commentator Steve Bower, that will show all the key moments as they happen. The show will run for a marathon 12 hours on Boxing Day.
Quote:
Amazon are giving every game the 'big-match' treatment, whether it's Manchester United v Tottenham or Southampton v Norwich.

As well as a studio in Stratford, each match will have its own presenting team at the ground, either at pitch-side or in a studio of their own.

More than 2,000 people will work on the broadcast, with 350 cameras up and down the country, as well as 70 on-screen hosts, pundits and commentators.

Goals Centre will be shown on each game stream until 30 minutes before kick-off when it will switch to the individual presenting team at each match for its own build-up, half-time show and post-match reaction.
Quote:
Match of the Day regulars Alan Shearer, Gabby Logan and Jermaine Jenas will be involved ó and the return of the legendary Jim Rosenthal.

Peter Schmeichel, Harry Redknapp, Dimitar Berbatov and Glenn Hoddle are expected to be the team at United v Spurs with Thierry Henry and Peter Crouch at the Merseyside derby.

Robbie Savage, Dion Dublin, Tim Sherwood and Joe Cole will be among the pundits on Goals Centre.

Fans will hear the familiar commentary tones of Clive Tyldesley, Jon Champion, Connor McNamara, and Guy Mowbray with summarisers Andy Townsend, Ally McCoist, Hoddle, Sue Smith and Kevin Kilbane.
Quote:
Premier League coverage will be in HD but will still rely on a strong WiFi connection, which has led to Amazon holding talks with the UK's leading broadband providers for assurances they will be able to cope with one of the biggest streaming events in sporting history.
Quote:
So, what about replays?

No problem this time. Three-minute highlights packages of each game will be available shortly after the final whistle. At midnight, both a 30-minute highlights reel and full re-runs will be uploaded and kept on for a week.
Quote:
Amazon Prime want to use Spidercams to give viewers a bird's eye view of the action. The radio-controlled camera follows the action at speeds of up to 21mph, suspended at least 10 metres above the ground by four wires connected to each corner of the stadium.

The technology is frequently used in cricket and rugby and was first used in the Premier League in a game between Liverpool and Manchester United in 2017.

Amazon's coverage will include what they call their X-Ray feature, which means viewers will be able to follow live Opta match stats, see line-ups and watch key highlights during the match alongside the live coverage"

Right come on bbs. I know many of us have donkey etc.. but even so sign up for prime if you arenít already. Letís use the power of the bbs for good.

The trial is free and will give you much better quality and covers two games.

This looks set to be a trail for Amazon. If they get lots of viewers then they might go big for the next broadcast rights. Imagine palace packages where we could finally have legal streams of all palace games. Two Goliathís like amazon and sky going head to head for rights will see pressure on removing this archaic 3pm rule!

Go sign up, boost figure and prove what a market there is for them to make it happen

The response to this experiment may also be a factor in prioritising which clubs are given channels or if it's pursued or not. I would happily pay for an online season ticket to the club or whoever.

I'm not a fan of streaming as it can be anything from 30 seconds to 3 minutes behind.
It will be interesting to see what it's like tomorrow.
Whats it like with sky streaming?

Going to give it a go seeing as its free so nothing to lose. Interesting to see how it performs. I use Amazon.de mostly but it appears the service is the same on all the Amazon EU regions.

List of fixtures here...

Also interesting that it is actually our fixture v Bournemouth tomorrow that will be the "debut" for this service. I would expect allot of people to stream our game who are not specifically interested in us/Bournemouth and just want to see how good the performance of the stream will be.
