Sorry Dave but having married into a family of Grimsby Town supporters and as a result watched them a lot in the 1990s, I can definitely say that Mendonca was quality. He was comfortably Grimsby's best player in a side which held its own in the second division, then he moved to Charlton and promptly scored over 30 goals in his first season there including a hat-trick in the play-off final against Sunderland as they gained promotion. He then followed that up with a hat-trick in Charlton's first home game back in the top flight.

His career was blighted by a chronic back complaint which got worse as he moved into his thirties and curtailed his career prematurely. But he was a class centre forward.

He was indeed quality. And took it out on us far too often, which makes him shit . One of the players back in the day I would have liked us to sign. He could actually have made a real difference, unlike the pretenders who just faded away.
