The largest category of immigration detainees is people who have sought asylum at some stage during their immigration process, including while in detention. In 2019, detainees who had sought asylum accounted for 58% (14,086) of people entering detention (Home Office, 2020a).

I wish, I was only ever a lowly AO. Probably the best thing the civil service could do is pay better. The court service where I worked was largely dependent to who've was available. They tended to lose competent staff due to better wages elsewhere.

Their hiring standards were pretty low. About a third of the staff would never have found employment elsewhere. Sounds harsh, and they were good people, but when you have a legally blind filing clerk, who has a club foot you know there's a problem attracting staff. Great guy, and I'm glad in doorways he had a job, but he was, through no fault of his own, a shit filing clark.

It would seem that being a morally bankrupt imbecile is a prerequisite for being a Tory MP these days.

Thatís downright weird
According to the Guardian article linked above they were blocked from doing so, presumably on the basis that it would prejudice the upcoming tribunal.

Will the tribunal bring forth evidence into the public sphere, assuming Rutnam stays strong and doesn't settle?

This is exactly my view of the court service from the other side, shockingly bad staff that could not give two hoots

Erm, isnít the expected response that all civil and public servants are pen pushing scum out to get the honest hardworking taxpayers of this fair land whilst having multiple tea breaks and an afternoon doze?

Edit - redandblue beat me to it (and the paraffin)

Hard workers in my expreience, and sometimes it's grim work. Sure you get flexibility time, but if also spend a lot of time dealing with domestic violence injunctions and preparing cases for sex offence trials. You don't get that working in private industry.

Taking notes in a child abuse case isn't easy going.

I always tried to be as helpful and understanding as I could within the rules (you can't give advise). But back in 2000 it was 4.30 an hour to deal with people's problems and worse days. When I left I got a three pound an hour Patrice as an office filing clerk for an IT company.

When your paid that kind of wage, it's admittedly hard to give a ****. It's also hard to get good staff.

Working the Crown court was special, you'd usually get death threats once or twice a week.

Tell me about it. I did court reporting on a Sheffield grooming gang around last winter for Uni, felt sick to my stomach throughout the proceedings. I have admiration for anyone who can tolerate working on cases like that regularly.
