Shaqiri and Xhaka celebrations

What are people’s thoughts on these? Stupid and unnecessarily provocative, or justified given what Serbia did to their people?

I understand the sentiment on their part but I think it's disrespectful to their adopted country and a gesture that provocative has no place in sport.

Yes, that’s where I’m at roughly. Can empathise lots with the two, particularly Xhaka if you read the stories about his father, but it shouldn’t really be happening in football.

And I have to agree with Mitrovic... if they feel so strongly about it, why did they turn down the chance to play for Kosovo?

Disrespectful to Switzerland, offensive to Serbia and ultimately completely hollow as they could have played for Kosovo but chose not to.

Agree with most of above but Shaqiri has been in Switzerland pretty much all his life, Xhaka but born there, and both have progressed through the Swiss national sides, under 17s upwards.
Plus Kosovo's national side wasn't recognised till 2016, at which time both players had been a long time in the Swiss national set up.

They had the option in 2016 to switch to the Kosovo national side and both chose not to though.

England got fined for having poppies on their shirt. FIFA should be disciplining both!

I have quite a few Serbian friends and even the most reasonable go into completely OTT nationalistic mode at any mention of Kosovo....but there are two sides to it...

'Kosovo Assembly members held a minute’s silence on January 31 to commemorate the death of Kosovo’s only Hague war crimes convict, Haradin Bala.

Bala, a former Kosovo Liberation Army guerrilla, died at the age of 60 after being granted early release in 2013.

The minute’s silence was proposed by MP Milaim Zeka from the governing coalition party NISMA (Initiative for Kosovo).

“All people in the world honour their values, their people, their heroes. Last night, a great man passed away, a man that has made a great contribution to this country, this nation, and thanks to him, we are sitting now in the parliament of Kosovo. I am speaking about Haradin Bala,” Zeka said.

...In November 2005, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia found Haradin Bala guilty of torture, cruel treatment and murder, and sentenced him to 13 years of imprisonment.'

We are talking current rivalries here way beyond anything in our part of Europe....nothing to date in football terms topping the drone carrying the Albanian double eagle remotely piloted into the stadium in Belgrade causing the Serbia v Albania qualifier to be abandoned.

Many left Kosovo, with Switzerland being a popular destination.....you see them driving down through Montenegro in the summer to visit friends and family...and ,like the large numbers of other migrants from former Yugoslavia ,feel a sense of very strong connection with the 'homeland'.

Any suggestion of Shaqiri being signed by us I'd say would be madness given the zero potential for bonding between him and our captain.

No room for politics in any sport.

From the BBC

"It will be argued that the behaviour illustrates the Albanian nationalist-supported notion of a Greater Albania, which makes territorial claims on parts of Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia and Greece."

Serbia have done a number on Switzerland if this gets 'proven'.

It was 'up yours' after scoring to a load of guys who had booed them earlier.
