Movie review thread(about the last film you saw)

Bombshell(2019)
The true story of the women who sued the head of Fox News for harassment in 2017.
Occasionally over complex, but improves as the story progresses with some standout scenes and decent use of narration.
Best performances from Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie & John Lithgow.
Malcolm McDowell has a cameo role as Rupert Murdoch. 7/10

Social.Dilemma - documentary about how backache, Twitter Tec is being manipulated to manipulate its users. Scary stuff and a must watch...though I fear the people who should watch and learn from it are so far down the fake news/ conspiracy theory rabbit hole, that they will just dismiss it as part of the mainstream media cabal of lies. 10/10

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood - Documentary about Scotty Bowers who sexually serviced or supplied men and women to the great and famous of Hollywood. Wonderful stories that don't shy away from the graphic and lurid. 8/10

We watched that tonight and all thought it was excellent.

All of the actors/characters were spot on. Hugh Grant gets a bad wrap I think because of his simple romcom early stuff (although I always thought Blue Eyes was a cracker of it's type) but he was very funny in this. They all did the serious but funny thing brilliantly. We all like different things I know but I would give this one a try. Farrell character was my favourite although MM in the lead role was spot on.

Immortal Beloved (1994)
An entertaining and often moving account of the life of Beethoven told in flashback with a decent level of characterisation.
Gary Oldman is typically excellent as Beethoven with good support from Jeroen Krabbe & Johanna ter Steege. 7.5/10

Gary Oldman is one of my faves. Disappears into the characters. A real actor.

Movie review thread(about the last film you saw)

Dreamgirls (2006)
A musical with a familiar story which is loosely based on The Supremes.
Not as saccharine as I’d thought it would be, often mentioning the civil rights movement.
Songs are pretty good, especially when Jennifer Hudson is singing. 7/10

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - of course I've seen it before but still brilliant (apart from the 2 precocious brats but they have their place in the story). And Dick Van Dykes German mittel european accent is delightfully worse than his cockerny one.

Annunziata Rees-Mogg is brilliant in it.

Movie review thread(about the last film you saw)

Planet Of The Apes(2001)
My expectations were low, but it was watchable enough, beautifully shot, especially the forest and night scenes.
The script is pretty humdrum compared with the 68 version, some of the ape makeup is poor and the Helen Bonham-Carter character is annoying, a poor copy of that played by Kim Hunter.
Tim Roth as the chimp general is pretty terrifying, though. 6/10

Enola Holmes. A perfectly decent Netflix fillum about Sherlock and Mycroft's younger sister with her off that Netflix thing as the main character (Pauline Kael and Dilys Powell have nothing on my critical skillz).

I'm a big fan of Gary Oldhan, love his 90s movies such as Leon, Dracula and his True Romance cameo as Drexl. But some of his lesser known cult movies such as Romeo is Bleeding, are recommended and worth a mention.

Gary Oldman asked to borrow my phone charger in the Air NZ lounge at LAX a few years back. He was cool as **** & I immediately developed a considerable man-crush on him.
