Can someone explain why an island, subject to some of the highest and most predictable coastal tides, has apparently turned its back tide/wave power?

That's easy. There are no lobbyists or secondees from that industry in the department. Still chock full of nuclear and big energy company people and with one or two offshore wind enthusiasts. No solar people either, hence their antipathy to that industry.

Seriously? An absence of lobbyists and place-men?

Bloody depressing.

Not sure that's true at all. Government is struggling with juggling cost of energy with climate change objectives. GB has adopted a piecemeal and overly complicated set of psuedo market based incentives/subsidies and is constantly tinkering and adding layers of complexity. Wave or tidal power has the problem of being out of market combined with significant environmental and marine concerns. Most effort is being focused on batteries and demand management which disaggregates the centralised approach to energy supply. It is probably the right way forward but trying to use market signals to deliver the correct technology in the required location is by no means an exact science.
Of course there is the added element of UK still beimg a gas producer which brings money onto the public purse.
PS i work in the sector and lobby government on behalf of a brosd client base ranging from fossil fuel to renewables

Are you speaking from your experience as an energy lobbyist? Perhaps as someone who is au fait with the inner workings of the Dept or Energy? Or has your has your B.A. in physics given you a particular insight?

Not at all, I'm using my experience of watching the gullible wind each other up with nonsense.

Also where do you intend to put this tidal wave generator where boats and ship aren't going to run into it.

Speaking of gullible, you spent nearly three years on here telling everyone who would listen (not many of us anymore sadly) that we’d be out of Europe on the 29th March.

How did that go?

My God you're thick.

Do a little reading about wave and tidal generators. As for 'boats and ships', that problem has really held back off shore wind farms hasn't it?

Take the myriad of proposals for barrages in the Bristol channel. Depending where they are they stop access to Bristol, Cardiff and the Severn estuary. Despite repeated attempts no one has ever come up with a practical scheme, if they had it would have been done. There's only a couple of large scale ones in the world, its a pipe dream and nothing to do with lobbying, its not a conspiracy by the Murdoch press, big business, the tories, the illuminati or the lizards etc. Its just not practical. Its a pipe dream of the greens (green behind the ears that is).

If you read my posts I've also been saying that there's no way the establishment would let us leave. Its only really since the beginning of this year that I doubted they'd fail in that endeavour.

The battle is between the tories who want to leave without a CU and Labour that want to leave with a CU. Neither want a PV. We are still on the path to leave. It will take a few more MP's to change their minds or be replaced by whatever means for the possible outcome to change if at all.

Don’t go changing O’Skinty.

Typical leaver lies. When did you remove your Brexit countdown clock?

Tidal power is lagging largely because it is a very difficult way to produce elecricity. Solar and wind are where the quicker wins are. Tidal power has the advantage of being predictable and so will play its part at some point. The advocates and lobbyists will appear when there is an investment and engineering case to be made that is better than marginal wind/solar investment.

Of course they did Skinty. There there. Why not have a little lie down and don't listen to these nasty posters who tear your arguments to shreds.
