R-Type, loved it - if you miss it try Resogun on PS4

However without Last of Us and HL 1 or 2 this list is meaningless

Wave Race 64 closely followed by Super Mario World - a 2D platformer yet to be bettered.

VR wise - Astrobot closely followed by Wipeout Omega. Virtual Reality Wipeout...yum.

Honourable VR mention to RE7 - you are in a horror film. I didn't cry though...

If I was really pushed then Tetris would get my vote.
It's as close to the perfect game as you could get. It got non gamers like my mum involved and it was the reason I bought a Gameboy even though I'd already bought it on C64.
It has a very interesting history too. The creator, Alexey Pajitnov, got gipped by the soviet government. I think he got paid about 250 quid for this multi-million seller. Nintendo eventually did the right thing though and hired him in an ambassadorial role.
There's a very insightful chapter on this very subject in a book by David Sheff called Game Over:The Fall And Rise Of Nintendo. If you can be arsed enough to hunt it out.

Really hope MP Trilogy comes to the Switch soon (apparently it is!). Always wanted to really get into them, got it on the Wii U on the Wii Emulator thing but hated the bloody motion controls for it.

SMW still my favourite Mario game by far. Tried to play it on my 3DS and I am so crap at platformers now. Kept dying, yet as a 9 year old I completed that game and the Star Road and the Special World too.

SMW is the perfect 2D platformer.
I bought the Snes console on import when it was released in 1990 in Japan when I was a proper nerd.
That game alone sold the system and it's yet to be bettered.

I'd normally put 'in my humble opinion' after that last sentence but there's no need.

Because I had the Snes Japanese import machine, SF II cost me 120 quid on import.

And worth every penny.

At that time.

I look back to those days in the 90s and how much Inplayed beat em ups. I rarely play them now, but Street Fighter II (and Turbo!), Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, Killer Instinct. They don't make them like they used to!

I'd have this as my best 90's game soundtrack...
