Vince was a gravitational exception. He didn’t run. He would float, glide, barely leave a stud mark. Just imagine Vince and Wilf in tandem. My that would be something. Vince was simply brilliant in my eyes.

Salako great crosser of the ball , either foot and on the run, but give me the silky skills of Vince any day, a delight to watch.

One of the best performances in a Palace shirt I've seen was Vince's for 9 man Palace v Middlesbrough. Salako, with all due respect, just didn't have the same ability to be able to do that.

I think I saw most of the games both players played at first team level - and plenty of matches at junior level too.

Of course, the FA Youth Cup is where Vince started to get noticed, way back in the 1975/76 season, whilst the 1st team were on that incredible FA Cup run to the Semi- Finals - the Palace juniors had a little run of their own, to the quarter finals of the Youth Cup (they won it in the following seasons - 76/77 and 77/78) and Vince was already a star turn by the summer of 1976, before breaking into the 1st team.

This is where Vinny has it over the Salad Bowl, who took several years to develop, involving a loan to Swansea to toughen him up under ex Palace skipper and coach, Ian ‘Taffy’ Evans - Salako came back a stronger player in 1989 after several brief appearances in previous seasons.

Two different styles really. Vince would go on a mazy dribble nearly anywhere on the pitch and often had the sometimes annoying knack of beating an opposition midfielder/defender, holding, keeping possession when a pass was on - and then going back to beat the same player. On more than one occasion I heard people moaning ‘Vince is going disappear up his own arse’ (purely in a footballing sense, because he was one of the nicest, down to earth players we have ever had).

Salad was much more direct - in fact that was how Steve Coppell and Alan Smith (who coached the juniors when Salako was breaking through) insisted on playing.

I’m fairly sure Sir Steve would not have let Vince have the free reign Terry Vegtable gave him or indeed the dreaded Mullery or Steve Kember in later years, when Vince was one of their main players.

Not sure if Vince walked before Steve Coppell came here in 1984, but Coppell brought in Alan Irvine, who was all about bombing down the wing at speed and delivering a snappy cross or killer pass - which was the prototype of what Salad turned out to be.

Vince was all out entertainment value and I’m not sure that would have fitted the way we played after he left in ‘84.

I’m giving the vote to Vince, he set the bar high with his skill, don’t forget he was following on from two of Palace’s greatest ever wingers in Don Rogers and Peter Taylor and didn’t struggle to match them for skill at all.

John Salako fine player sadly the injury cost him so much in terms of possible England career after doing so well on an England B summer tour and after a long road back scored in his return game for us. Both players were valuable parts of the respective Palace teams they played for and I enjoyed watching them both in their times with us. However Vince had just that little bit extra that hint of stardust. Maybe it was down to the type of Palace teams they played for. Big Mal/ El Tels teams played with a swagger, attacking, full of confidence and belief. Sir Steve, uncompromising simple way of playing the simple game other than Wrighty functional rather than stylish. Both great sides and count myself lucky to have seen both in full flow.

Salako. There i said it.

Excellent in both 1990 semi final & 1990 final. Goalscorer in 1991 ZDS final win, helped team finish 3rd & vital part of 93/94 championship winning side that pissed all over the division that year, scored great goals with both feet

One of the best crossers of the ball i've played with - Ian Wright

Who knows how many goals Benteke would score if he had salako crossing for him week in & week out?

I would hazard a guess that the 5 people that have chosen Salako so far, were not lucky enough to be born in time to see Vince play.

For those that don’t remember Vince, here is a brief clip of him centring on the FA Cup 4th Round Tie in January 1984 v West Ham, which ended 1-1 (West Ham were strangely not struggling in the top flight in the mid 80’s!) - Palace losing the replay 0-2 and a few months later, nearly all of that Palace team were gone, including, thankfully, Alan ‘He’s got a lovely sun tan’ Mullery. Such was life in 1984, Big Brother was watching the Miner’s strike and Race Relations involved pointing out that some footballers were not white.

I remember Hilaire having a great game that day, but we would have needed to win that first game.

Typical that Swindles scored for the Hamsters - it was funny that the report said Palace were ‘missing’ Andy McCulloch. Missing and McCulloch were often in the same sentence of most reports on his Palace appearances.

That Palace team would struggle in the League, but go on good Cup runs, but that really was about as good as it got and we always struggled in the League - it was such a dull time, but Vince could still light games up occasionally - one of the last games for Kevin Mabbutt too, he was special on his day, sadly, with his injury record, not many of those either!

Indeed. I liked Mullery calling him “a sort of Tom Jones of show business”.

Certainly brought back some funny forgotten familiar feelings, as I used to stand in the half empty Arthur (or New Stand as we always called it!) - but watching Palace under Mullery was a bit like visiting the dentists, you didn’t want to go, but you did and kept thinking ‘He’ll have to go’.

I’ll fetch my coat.
