I actually think it would be better if the pundits weren't ex players. They all tend to say exactly the same thing and reel offf cliche after cliche. Football is a simple game but it would be refreshing to hear the thoughts of a more erudite and perhaps witty outsider than the tedious and often moronic meanderings of shearer and chums

I was at a UEFA Referees Course in Lisbon last week, many of the Elite referees were there doing VAR simulators - Michael Oliver, Craig Pawson and Anthony Taylor to name the EPL ones.

What I found staggering was the level of contradiction in terms of when VAR can intervene. The Barnes penalty incident for example - I heard them talk about similar incidents where lets say the referee gave a yellow for diving, they then all agreed the VAR wouldn't intervene. But should the referee have given nothing, then yes the VAR should intervene as there were 'elements of a foul' involved from the goalkeeper. So there is still a sense of backing the referees decision even if it's wrong!

Watching them do the simulator too seemed to take ages to come to a decision. There are four people involved - a tv operator, the VAR and an AVR (I think that's what they called him), all sat next to each other.

I predict mayhem when it's introduced!

VAR will not be brilliant for anyone.

Every time we score I automatically look across at the linesman as it is. Thatís bad enough because it delays the moment of celebration by a few seconds but being at a match with VAR would be unbearable.

Iíve paid to watch a live sporting event and some bloke in a shed is determining its outcome? I sit in the Whitehorse so canít see the big screen... everyone else in the country can see the result before me. Nah. Thatís rubbish.

Oh, and itís crap. It doesnít work.

But yet it seems to work fine in Spain, Italy, France and Germany.

Why do we seem to be struggling with it?

I do this as well. I'm too worried I will look a twat celebrating a disallowed goal.

La Liga have used VAR this season. I have found that usually I know if the goal/penalty will be disallowed or given, especially the end I sit.

The biggest change for me is they need to show the incident on the screens and have a live feed between the ref and the VAR official.

Not from what I see elsewhere. Interminable delays. Anti-climatic. Still canít get it all right eg some tackles that may not be or may be fouls.

Itís turned rugby into a technical video lesson with the film Ďrocking back and forthí and cricket the same - also making it anticlimactic, sterile and undermining the authority of officials and making aspects of sport some sort of soulless exercise in Ďgetting it perfectí - when in fact itís the nature of the rhythm, flow, nuance and character that makes sport entertaining to watch and play.

But it offers good branding exposure, business deals and Ďpartnershipsí for Filthy Rich FIFA (c) and U£FA (c)

The more of this stuff creeps in, the closer to a two-time game we get. The beauty of football has always been its simplicity. We're losing it, and for what?

Its horrible and, when a decision goes against Real we have days of analysis. It has also robbed some teams of times of celebration because of the wait for confirmation of a decision.

I don't think that would be the effect. referees will still be blinded by big club bias - he will start from the assumption that Liverpool should get a penalty and look for anything that confirms that, whereas he will strat from the assumption that CP couldn't have a penalty and seek any thing that confirms that.

This allowed a deeper analysis on a handful of games.

But these days they try to give each game more or less equal weight, and so fall between two stalls - not enough match coverage and rushed, non-insightful analysis.

The confusion for the people in the stands has got to be removed, so showing the incident on the screen would help.

Also miking up the ref would help, so you could hear what he's saying and then you wouldn't get all the swearing at refs (or if you did, we'd all hear it and the subsequent red card would be a no-brainer).

In other words, far more like rugby and cricket use technology.

Refs have watched his incidents time and time again and have decided not to give fouls. What makes you think one more look at them will make any difference? The decisions will be the same, regardless if they are right or not.
