What we should do: Make some big & bold decisions the day we know we are safe, and think about manager and major player sales (even if it doesn’t go down well with the fans) to raise funds for a complete rebuild all players ready to go day 1 of pre season

What we will do: Pi55 of the manager with failures to get those 5 or 6 over the line then buy 3 on transfer deadline day 2 weeks after the season has started. Around November look for a new manager

Ward-Prowse would be the only one of them i would be interested in. Dawson, would be an upgrade in the 25 on Delaney and based on the fact i havent seen him, Jach as well.

I recall Parish voted against the decision. I for one am pleased though. Both this and last season, we've started terribly from our opening fixtures despite kind starts in both. The common denominator is that we hadn't secured our number one targets in both.

You class 4 of the big 6 in your first 8 games as kind?

It is the right decision and hopefully the other major league will follow suit.

The idea that we don't have money to invest, should we stay up, is laughable. If we do stay up we will have a bit of summer stability for once after being shafted by Pulis and Big Sam (plus the incompetent Pardew). Now is the time to invest. We are actually in a terrific position; we have two academy lads who will be first choice, plus a lot of Premier League experience and the core of the squad are under contract, automatic first XI picks and don't need to be replaced. The signings we made in January were good for the squad. I like Sorloth and Jach plus Guaita are potentially cracking value for money. There's not a lot of deadwood. We haven't spent millions on lots of players who have failed to adapt or who haven't contributed. Even the much maligned Benteke contributed with goals last season and his all-round game plus workrate has been much better this season.

The first thing to look at is the formation that Roy wants to play. I think he desperately wants to play 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1) and actually I think that suits our best player who we should build the team around. For me, Zaha needs to play further forward without defensive responsibility. He is not only our greatest ever player, but also the best player in the Premier League outside the top 6. We'd be mad to have him in the full back position for half the game when he can have so much influence through the middle. Away from home there is more space and we have seen how dangerous he can be down the middle and further up the pitch especially. So the first thing to recognize is that we should (and I think will) be playing 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 with Wilf up front.

So let's look at the rest of the squad, position by position (those who I feel should be first choice in bold, those who are out-of-contract but who we should keep in italics):

Goalkeeper
Guaita, Hennessey, Speroni
I'd keep both Hennessey and Speroni as back-up if they are willing to stay. If a good keeper becomes available then fine, but happy to give the Spaniard a go, and keepers normally stay fit for the season

Left full back
PVA, Souare
I like PVA as an attacking left back for his intelligence and footballing ability. Clever and technically very good. Underrated as a defender on the ground, but poor in the air. Schlupp is a good squad player - better in the air, very quick and good in the tackle. Souare can potentially go out on loan. Well stocked here, no first choice or cover needed here.

Centre back
Sakho, Tomkins, Dann, Kelly, Jach
Sakho and Tomkins is a good fairly mobile centre back pairing for the Premier League. Both are proven at this level when up to speed and not injured. We do potentially need quite a bit of cover for them and Dann being out with a bad injury is not ideal as we don't know when he will be back. Also Jach is young and unproven. Kelly is adequate cover, but I think we are ok for first choice and probably only need cover from a squad player who could play centre back in an emergency.

Right back
AWB
AWB should battle for first choice next season, Kelly can also play right back in an emergency. Perhaps need another body here as sounds like Ward is off.

Left midfield
Schlupp
I don't think we have anyone who is a specialist left midfielder, or specialist cover. Note that I've said left midfield rather than winger: Hodgson likes to play with a narrow and deep 4 in midfield. With an attacking left full back (PVA) this makes even for sense. Schlupp is good cover for left mid, as is Townsend although he prefers to play on the right. Zaha could also cover there, but is likely to be playing up front in the main. We need a first choice left mid. I believe this player needs to be quick, and technically excellent.

Centre midfield
Milivojevic, Riedewald, McArthur, Joniesta, Puncheon
Milivojevic, the captain, is first choice defensive mid. His positioning is excellent, his passing is good and in a forward direction and he takes a good penalty. Riedewald is cover for him but well down the pecking order. McArthur is a great squad player as he has the energy to get around the pitch. We need another first choice midfielder to play alongside Luka. Ideally someone with the legs to get around the pitch (because Luka is quite slow). Also someone with aerial ability would be great because PVA and AWB are not the best in the air, and if they could cover centre back in an emergency that would be brilliant. Ideally I feel we need 6 centre mids in the squad as it is such a crucial position that you can't really ask someone else to cover here.

Right midfield
Townsend
Andros Townsend is the perfect right midfielder in that he is happy to play quite narrow, is defensively sound in terms of getting up and down the pitch for 90 mins and he tracks back well. He can also put over a good cross and scores the odd goal. He can play either right or left, but prefers the right, although I think perhaps he needs to score more goals to justify playing on that side as he cuts in too much and doesn't put in enough crosses as a consequence. We definitely need a first choice wide midfielder who can play either on the right or on the left hand side.

Target man
Benteke, Sorloth, Wickham
I know there's a lot of sentiment that Benteke should be moved on, and he has had a rough time in front of goal, but I think he should get one more season to prove his worth, and the other 2 can put pressure on his place and replace him if he doesn't improve his finishing. Not least because he won't be worth as much now. Benteke is especially useful for his aerial power in both boxes because our centre backs are not the best in the air so that's another reason for giving him another season. We are well stocked in this position.

Second striker
Zaha, Sako
We should build the team around Zaha in this position. Sako will hopefully sign a new contract, and will be cover for this position - he is too slow to play out wide imho but he is a goalscoring threat when played up front with a targetman should Wilf get injured. I don't think we need a new first choice in this position, but perhaps if we could sign a new wide man who can also play up front that would be a good thing.

So in conclusion I think we need the following:

1) A right back
2) At least one first choice centre mid to play with Milivojevic
3) At least one first choice wide midfielder, probably two

1) Right back
Fredericks, Dawson,

2) Centre mid
Dendoncker, Amadou

3) Wide midfield
Antonio, RLC, Burke,

Anyway, that's it for now. Will add more players if I think of them, but 1 or 2 wide midfielders and 1 centre mid and 1 right back should do it for us if we can re-sign Sako. (I'm assuming Cabaye and Ward will move on.) Apologies for the incredibly long post.

From the teams likely for relegation, assuming we stay up, i would look at:

WBA - Matt Phillips, Jay Rodriguez (think he will go back to Burnley), and maybe Oli Burke.

Stoke - Allen, maybe BMI

Southampton - Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Redmond

Huddersfield - Mooy,Van La Parra

Swansea - Mawson

GF, surely we need another striker. How can we trust Wickham to stay fit? With him out of the equation, 2 strikers isn’t enough for the Prem. We could do with a decent striker that isn’t a target man anyway, would give us another dimension. No, I’m not considering Sako (another injury prone one) and Wilf strikers.

I think a lot of your post is very reasonable but on the wide midfield role your options here might be a bit optimistic.

Sessegnon, i agree with what you say but IF Fulham don't come up they will have £25m+ offers for him, are we going to be in the market to compete with the big boys?

Kenedy - rumours are both Bayern and PSG are tracking his availability

Maitland-Niles, as you say unlikely to be allowed to leave. Unlikely that Arsenal will not be in Europe next year where they will want to have a big squad so unlikely i think.

Burke and Lookman are possibilities and more likely and Traore has only managed 3 goals in a good Championship side. He has the attributes but has yet to put it together and must be doubts now if he ever will.

The whole concept of his post is around Wilf, and Sako, being in a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 so you cannot discount them as strikers in the context of that post.

If you want Wilf wide then yes we need another striker and don't need the left midfielder.

I would love Sessegnon, obviously he won't be coming here but for his sake I really think it would be best for him to play.

Conor Hourihane from Villa would also be a great addition, even if we were in the Champ be a good buy

Hodgson wants to play 4-4-2. And it's a narrow defensive midfield 4. So that means Wilf either plays there, and will have to defend for about half the game on the edge of his own penalty area, or we play him up front in a 2. If we play him up front in a 2, which is where he has played most of the season, he will be first choice. And if he is first choice he will likely play with a target man (CW, AS or CB).

So, which striker would you like us to sign to sit on the bench?

Agree with all of what you say, and didn't know about Kenedy so that's interesting. To answer your question, I'd hope we would be willing to offer £25m+ for Sessegnon. He's a class act already, and will only get better. Apparently they want £40m if they don't go up and I'd be happy for us to pay if that's what it takes. But sadly I think they will go up which will rule us out forever.
