Not sure it is 'far' more useful. Could sell one goalie for a fortune, have another decent one already and then have a large sum to improve the squad generally. I think actual spend still has a relevance. even if net is more relevant.

I mean that’s a rare and special case isn’t it, the one position where it’s typical for the player to play every minute of a league season without injury or interruption. Definitely doesn’t apply to Newcastle. Or any club I can think of off the top of my head for that matter.

I’d agree that it’s important to look at each transfer individually though. Like I did a couple pages back for the transfers Newcastle did in the championship.

Since Hodgson came to Palace, Newcastle have a net spend in the transfer market of £12.5m, Palace have spent £21m.

The fact that he can play entertaining stuff when the squad is right to do so but functional stuff at other times suggests he can get the best out of what he has to work with and adapts the style of play based on what he has. Those are pretty good attributes.

Doubt he would come to us.

Bear in mind if AWB goes Roy will have a net spend of -£30m.

If Zaha goes as well it will be even higher, but do we have to readjust last season? No.

The claim was, that Rafa had spent less than Roy to finish lower. That is not the case. The season is over the position fixed. In that time frame Palace had a higher net spend than Newcastle.

We could throw in that Roy was working for a chairman he loves the club and offers support where he can and Rafa was working for a money-first businessman with no affinity to the club. The Newcastle play in a toxic atmosphere with protests whereas Selhurst is supportive.

Money if not the only measure of performance, but the claim made was simply wrong.

Rafa would have Better players to work with here than in Newcastle. They are a poor side that he worked wonders with.

Probably right bloke for us but wrong timing

Maybe, but Rafa gets the benefit of high profile players players sold after relegation. If we do the figures up to July 19, Roy will have a lower net spend. If we do it over the 2 years both managers were in the Premier League, Roy will have a lower net spend.

I did it over the time Hodgson has been at Palace.

If you do it over the last 2 seasons, Newcastle spent £32m and Palace spent £41m, Newcastle finished above us in the previous season. That only supports the case that Rafa did a good job there too.

Doesn't change what is the most important issue that I cannot see a reason why he would be tempted to come to Palace.

Did anyone else see Newcastle at Selhurst last season?

They parked the bus came for a draw and offered no threat. They were miserable.

They took a point away which was what they planned for the game. Stayed up based on a solid defence.

Absolutely doesn’t. Roy has a lower net spend once AWB goes. He achieved a higher finish this season with a lower net spend and also took the club from a position of relegation certs to safety.

And that isn’t an issue. Why would we be tempted to bring him here is the issue. We won’t be. We have a much better manager.

Really not sure that Rafa is that good a manager. He certainly likes to give the impression that things are not his fault when it is not going that well.

Roy is a much better fit for us at the moment.

What were the 2 net spends? They finished 1 place below us. Last year they finished 1 place above us. Pretty closely matched.

You clearly don't like Benitez, thats fair enough its your opinion.
