Reminiscent of SJ's retaining of AJ that didn't turn out OK.

Aston Villa have been plunged into turmoil after being hit with a £4.2m tax bill by HMRC, while the Championship club have also suspended chief executive Keith Wyness.

Villa are under pressure to make the payment within seven days or face a winding-up order, while the prospect of administration cannot be completely discounted as the club count the cost of missing out on promotion.

It is understood Villa were late making the regular tax payment last Friday and though club sources insist the issue will be resolved this week, the West Midlanders are now gripped in a financial crisis.

Dr Tony Xia, the owner and chairman, is alleged to be struggling with cash-flow issues in China, which restricts the distribution of money leaving the country. There is no suggestion that Xia is struggling financially.

Villa are in a bad place financially.

They have so many old players on big wages.

They might have to sell Grealish.

Bet he would go Leicester as a replacement for mahrez. As he's young and won't have to move, or move far. Villa must be pretty poorly ran as there fan base is one of the best, and they get good gates, good shirt sales etc

They will have to sell more than Grealish.

They are huge club but lessons are never learned. We know better than most and itís not a nice place to be. Football is f*****. Too much money and as many as possible trying to take as much as they can. Player may earn big wages but I can guarantee their agents take more than their fare share. Itís a free for all for the scourge of the game.

Gates and shirts donít touch the sides nowadays Iím afraid

Only premier league money makes a difference to a club like Villa

Sad for them, simply because of their connections to Palace's origins.

They are an example of why parachute payments should be cut.

They are there to help cover the drop off in costs from prem to championship.

At the moment they are just an additional huge income that most other champsionship sides dont have, that teams then use to try and gamble their way back into the prem

or

allow teams to overspend in the prem knowing they will get it back through parachute payments should they go down.

Richard Conway @richard_conway

What a mess at Villa. Payroll tax overdue + next month’s looming.
Huge wage bill.
Unless there’s further cash injection from Chinese owner (seems unlikely) or buyer found then administration may be inevitable.
Told it could take £75m just to get through season.
Crisis time.

Kodjia could be a good squad player if we can get him fairly cheap

Only relegated in 2016 so have another year of payments in which they will receive £20m, about half what they recieved this year.

Apparently their wage bill is closer to £65m a year and income from the Championship is closer to £15-20m so even parachute payments are not enough and Villa have posted losses of £150m over the past 3 years. They are in significant danger of FFP rules unless they make dramatic changes.

Xia has gambled on getting up this season and with failure will come a huge cost and the Chief Exec has already been suspended.

I don't know what can be put in the rules (or even if anything should be) but clubs relegated are always going to take the opinion that the first couple of seasons are their best chance to go back to billionaires row and they're going to take a risk keeping players on inflated contracts and playing the part of big spender to try and crush the opposition and get back straightaway. It does occasionally work but far more often it doesn't.

I remember us getting back in (93/94?) and we lost two of our biggest name players in Geoff Thomas and Eddie McGoldrick and who did we sign? Matthew and Dyer later in the season along with Stewart on loan? We dominated the division but I guess we really shouldn't have gone down the season before. Maybe football is just too different now to compare

Micah Richards has not played for Aston Villa for 600+ days and still continues to earn £35,000 a week (he had a clause in his contract stating his wages would have doubled had Villa been promoted last week)

He is fully fit though apparently but Bruce doesn't think he can play twice a week and hasn't played him.
