Is this not deterrent enough?

Lots of people seem to think that the lack of deterrent in the problem. I strongly disagree.
So you don't go to prison the first time? I think that says it all.

Very difficult with stop and search let's say police in full uniform approach someone who has got a knife drugs ect on him the minute he can see police approaching him good chance he will run . He will prob be in trainers tracksuit ect and easily outrun a copper in boots and heavy uniform he only needs to get out of sight throw drugs knife away 200 yards later give self up now no weapon why did you run because I was scared didn't know who you were ect told by copper this happens a lot .

Well that just proves it's a deterrent, maybe that one in a thousand supposed incident might have stopped that kid in the park getting murdered because someone does not have a knife anymore.

If kids think there is a good chance they are going to be searched with Cops on the street how many might think it's not worth the hassle ?

I agree should be more police and more searches if it saves 1 kids life it's worth it but politics pc ect will come into this . Why are more people are stopped in croydon and searched then In a Cotswold village because more chance there find weapon or drugs maybe mps police are scared of offending people in certain circumstances areas ect so after this dies down nothing will change .

As well as deterrents such as in the discussion above, does anyone think that changing the environment of some of London's youth might help?

Since austerity, we have less social activities for our youth, fewer programmes for betterment, less policing, less mental health help and they have considerably fewer prospects. Does anyone think this could be related?

Have never carried a knife and never would, and Iíve been I. Some very precarious situations before. Personally feel that what they should do with the problem, is change the law to if your caught with a knife, itís classed same as a gun, and you should get minimum 10 years. Anyone carrying g a knife is obviously willing to use it.

Absolutely. Legalising drugs would also go a long way to solving policing problems - and raise tax revenues too.

I suspect there'd be a few more societal problems if coke was legalised.

A fall in police numbers will have had a negative effect, but austerity has had a much greater impact.

To explain - if you take a look at studies of people in jail, they disproportionately come from problematic backgrounds. Here's a 2012 study: To view the link you have to Register or Login

Of prisoners surveyed:
24% had been in a care home as a child.
29% experienced domestic abuse as a child. 41% observed it.
37% had a parent with a non-motoring conviction.
42% had been expelled from school.

So if you want to reduce crime, it's not really about putting more police on the street, you actually need support services to be improved to help children before they fall into the vicious circle of crime, jail and reoffending.

Even if austerity was reversed over night and investment in social services went back to 2008 levels we will continue to see a growth in violent crime for years, perhaps a decade or more, as the young adults of today that were failed as children through years of austerity go on to offend and end up in jail.

The depression of 2008 and the massive increase in youth unemployment must have played a part. As must the marginalisation of young people through criminal records checks being too stringent until recently.

Oh yes I agree. But then the discussion appeared to move to a load of people blaming lack of deterrent and police.
