Well we had Milne earlier today implying that NATO was done. So that's a nice easy start.

I have heard extracts so not the full letter but does it give clear evidence of his guilt or just the strong likelihood of his guilt based on such things as him being uncooperative?

This after all is May we are talking about.

His denials mean either he is a huge liar, or Exile's cock-up scenario starts to loom...either way another big downward arrow for the incumbent lot

"Compelling evidence" she says and he was uncooperative. His reply "emphatically" denies it.

From the BBC;

"But security correspondent Frank Gardner said the BBC had been told that "more than one concerning issue" had been uncovered regarding Mr Williamson during the leak inquiry and not just the Huawei conversation."

If he is being uncooperative then the likelihood is it has come from somewhere in the Defence Ministry. Whether it was him or someone he is protecting is sort of irrelevant at this point.

But fundamentally you have a scenario where someone in the defence ministry thought what was decided was exceptionally bad idea if they chose to breach this particular confidentiality.

He has also strongly denied it was him or anyone within his department. I am also unsure why him being described as being uncooperative means he actually has been, or if he has been why that actually leads you to state that it is a likelihood it came from within the defence ministry. Surely the nature of how he has been uncooperative is the key to then making sensible assumptions no?

I cannot believe I am defending this horribly creepy **** but as I have said this May we are talking about and she is as competent as she is trustworthy.

GCHQ is part of the FCO. MI5 is Home Office. Defence Intelligence falls under the MoD. All would be rightly appalled by the decision. There’s a thing called the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre, and the oversight board for that is covered by all three departments with the Cabinet office. So Hunt, Williamson or Javid. Or someone in their departments.

It’s a guess but an educated guess. Javid and Hunt both have huge leadership ambition. Williamson likes playing kingmaker. He would be more prepared to do it. The others wouldn’t. Personal ambition.

The other option is Lidlington or the Cabinet Office.

Hard to know really. But he may be the only one who can confirm or deny it was Williamson. The Williamson letter and his subsequent media statements see him continuing to insist on his innocence. The Met are currently saying they are not investigating.

Security services have been warning this government about the perils of using Huawei for some considerable time (probably earlier than Cameron and Osborne's visit to China). While May and Fox refuse to listen others leak and Williamson was the obvious scapegoat.

Your defence of Williamson is one that many will privately agree with. Even if he is a right pain in the a*se.

Can’t recall a more brutal sacking at that level. It is a huge accusation which is being vehemently denied. Who’s lying? The (ex) Defence Secretary or the PM?

They really are a completely embarrassing shambles of a Government aren’t they.

The International Development secretary to Defence Minister?

This government is beyond parody.

If Williamson did leak this, then he should be prosecuted, unbelievable that a Defence Minister would do this.

Erm....*****ew the sacking. There’s the overtone of a serious criminal offence here of the sort where you get to spend time in the place where the sun comes through the window in stripes.

If there’s substance, arrest the ******. Perhaps that will teach our politicians that they aren’t above the law
