Good lord (AJ).
Using that logic Tony Benn or Gerry Adams represented the `establishment’.

Anthony Wedgwood Benn, the former Viscount Stansgate, you mean?

Also, Corbyn has a brother called Piers and grew up in a manor house.

Tony Benn was a government minister (for energy). If that isn't establishment what is?

I wouldn’t put Tony Benn on the sides of MNC’s, banks, the 1%, tax havens, military suppliers, media old boys etc....that is what i regard as establishment, not whether they have been employed by the State. By some of these definitions Bobby Sands was establishment - worked in the House of Commons.

When I think of "establishment" I think of that to mean the royals, their stooges, the aristocracy and the lizards that actually run this country.

He didn't work in the House of Commons though, what with being in prison then dying.

An IRA hunger striker is ‘establishment’ because he was an mp for a month before dieing. Yep that’s totally comparable to Jeremy Corbyn and tony benn

On a side note the left hate the establishment, the right hate the establishment and both define entirely different people as establishment. We need a word upgrade; it’s not fit for purpose anymore and it is surprisingly irritating. Whenever anyone uses it now I have a ffs Jesus Christ moment as whatever is said next is invariably going to be total bollocks.

I saw Farage railing against the establishment the other day, and people applauded.

That was the point of using him as an example. But you are correct in the different definitions thing. Imo it’s those who hold the real power and their supporters rather than rigid job description definitions.

You make a factually incorrect statement as proof that the definition of a word is wrong?

And then you claim to have done it deliberately?

You and WCB were using job description and birth as definitions whether a person is part of or against the establishment. It was a mere extension of the same logic.

That would be interesting but for the fact I was not doing that, nor (I doubt) was WCB.

I would argue it’s about being in a position of power. But, if you don’t like that and you clearly don’t, then perhaps you’d care to give your own definition.

Tony Benn, like it or not was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and was a government minister. If that's not establishment what is.

Adams and Sands on the other hand and indeed other elected IRA members didn't take their place in the commons, its fair to call them anti-establishment. In fact their whole raison d'etre was anti-establishment.
