Interesting how it’s all going to work. Say on a Saturday afternoon there are six Prem games being played; all the VAR people will be in the same room, within their own booths watching their assigned match. Each match has three people working on it; the main VAR official, his assistant and and an editor who on instruction from the official when pressing a green button, lines up the incident he has requested to see again. He also has a red button which he presses to talk to the match official at the ground.

The screens in each booth are split into quarters, so the main official asks what four camera angles from the seven at the ground, he wants to view. There is also another screen that the assistant VAR official watches while the main official is looking at an incident, incase something else happens in live time that he misses while checking the four screens.

They are trying to minimise the times the ref at the game has to check the TV at the side of the pitch. Apparently if a manager interferes with the ref while he’s viewing that screen, he’ll be sent to the stands. Players will be booked in a similar instance.

The weird one is if a player makes the sign of a TV - sharades style - to influence the ref to go to VAR, the player will be talked to; however if he does it in an aggressive fashion, he’ll be given a yellow. So in other words top 6 clubs players will be talked to and the rest will be booked.

Currently the screen doesn't do anything to interfere with what people see on the pitch

From next season it appears that peoples eyes will be drawn to a screen as much as they would to a lino flagging, except a bunch of peeps wont be able to see it, and that includes prob half of the Arthur Wait

They currently will not be allowed to show replays of any incident so screens will simply display a bland message that a VAR review is taking place. I wonder if they could even possibly use the electronic advertising boards to display this message and other safety related information or are they simply pre-programmed?

VAR can only be used to confirm all goals, possible offsides, penalty decisions, mistaken identity and potential sending-offs. It cannot be used for every foul or booking. Thus it could not have been used at Southampton to confirm the foul by Ward-Prowse which led to Wilf's eventual dismissal.

There was the incident in a Champions League game for United this season where they first had to decide if a potential handball was inside the penalty area before judging whether it was actually handball and awarding the subsequent penalty. If it had been outside the area they could not then award a free-kick unless they considered it to be denying a goal scoring opportunity. Thus there will probably be many grey areas when it is implemented next season.

The Match of the Day twats, I mean 'experts', make me laugh when they have a heated debate about an incident and can't agree on something because there is no clear view (penalties etc.) and say: "We'll be alright next year with VAR".

Erm, no, there'll still be no clear view of the incident, still down to one person's opinion.

That will absolutely happen. Townsend's goal that was set up by Zaha is a good example.

I’ve always thought it was a shame they never installed a screen on top of the Holmesdale, especially seeing as they clearly intended there to be one

As long as it's not too disruptive VAR will probably be okay as long as it's the ref making the final call.

Well , we know that isn't the case

The wankers had a red card decision overturned by the VAR ref against Wolves, when there was nothing clear or obvious about it being an error

VAR ref just bottled it, even though it was a clear red (IMO anyway)

I look forward to VAR. Anyone who has watched football for more than 3 seasons will have become aware of the big club bias. There have been some staggering decisions this season alone. I read somewhere that Liverpool would have had 9 goals chalked off for handballs, infringements and offsides alone. This will certainly help the 'smaller' clubs. In fact I am slightly amazed the 'big' club lobby allowed it, I can only assume that they arrogantly believe that all those decisions should go their way by right.
VAR will also overturn plain bad decisions. Anyone who witnessed Scott Dann having a penalty awarded against him for 'fouling' Robert Snodgrass (when he was at Hull City) when he never touched him will know what I mean. To view the link you have to Register or Login
Or perhaps Chelsea's offside goal vs Cardiff goal - To view the link you have to Register or Login

It will also help Wilf in particular. We know he does not dive but VAR will prove it.
Yes there will be teething problems but generally we will all benefit from more correct decisions.

I agree with this completely.

In my view, the feeling when a goal you have fully celebrated is disallowed is worse than the feeling when you concede a goal.

And you think the VAR officials won't be just as biased? They'll find ways, especially as they'll largely be anonymous.

No. In quantum physics terms, it will be anti-wanker. Should one somehow come into contact with anyone associated with Manure, South London will be annihilated.

Except the VAR officials won't have a 'hiding place' behind which to exercise their bias. A ref can always say he was unsighted or missed 'something' in that one, single instant he had to see it. VAR offers multiple views and replays for watching officials. Expect a new level of controversy, with managers bemoaning VAR missing certain injustices, after the fact. I think scrutiny on VAR officials will become intense, enforcing neutral, accurate appraisal. Hope so, anyway.

But the feeling of suppressing your celebrations while VAR makes its judgment will be even worse.

Which I think is what Bodger is getting at.

At some point in the future we'll have been conditioned into taking for granted that the ball nestling in the back of the net means nothing. And we'll stand around chatting about the weather until the big screen flashes "GOAL!!!"

Then we can jump up and down and scream and shout.

But I doubt we'll feel like it.
