He was though probably Hodgsons MotM last night. He made a good effort of getting near the pens without actually stopping one going in, which is probably what his manager wanted. When Begovic tried to avoid facing Man City's attack by planting the ball into Wayne's midriff Wayne did the only thing he could to ensure we did not progress and missed the target. Roy (and Ray although i doubt he could see as was probably still sat on his seat in the dugout) would have been proud.

He wasn’t alone. I don’t think the middle 2 even attempted anything more than a tap to the side in the first half.

I don't know what was in their minds but it looked as if they treated it like pre-season and losing gives them more time to prepare over next 2 weeks rather than have this Carabao distraction. Another year maybe we should have a go but in our current state I am happy to let it slide. My guess is the ‘management’ in the widest sense will be happy with that too although won’t admit it I am sure.
Roy did say in his Southampton post match interview that he has to work on picking a team for Bournemouth that will not expose to many players who will play against Man Utd without embarrassing ourselves. Job done.

They played a player for 90 minutes who they apparently want £50m for.

Oh well, unfortunately now there will be no competitive games for our "fringe" players to test them with, as these competitions give us the chance to test the ability of these players, and we should take these games more seriously to try and progress as far as possible as it creates a winning mentality for players and also lifts the spirits/expectancy of our fans, all be it in a sub standard competition.
There was no stars of the game. For us or Bournemouth.

Bournemouth looked like the only team trying to win. Cannot complain at the result however disappointing.

Well I really hope that’s not quite right but I hear your warning. His brief cameo on Saturday was fine and his 45 mins, considering, was encouraging but yesterday he was in some very good positions, received the ball and just tapped it back as if we were warming up. He can’t have been like that all the time if he ended up as top 10 Championship surely?

I am obviously OK with him having rough edges, needing time to settle/develop etc. but will be a tough and long season if he ‘refuses quite so many openings. You don’t get so many in the PL. They were all pretty much under water with only Jordan and lesser extent Andros looking as if they had another gear.

General point - One thing that always mystifies me re a new season (more so this one as the last one finished so recently) is how they come back and play as if physically they are way off their levels still. As an amateur with a full time job etc and a ‘life’/wife etc it made sense that first week or so I was puffing and took time to get fit and regain my touch etc. but even allowing for the difference in demands of their game its a mystery as to how far off they are as professionals who train most days.

Yes, and that sounds right and as you say, job done. The young defenders all did pretty well considering and Kelly got a good run out. Went for one of his trademark slides if you noticed but grasses wasn’t wet enough and regretted it I think Late on. The rest were largely wasted opportunities in terms of making an impact but topped up their minutes. Like a 90 min 11 a side training drill. Both sides guilty of this mind.

Thanks for that Eddie, probably a more accurate assessment of our performance.
I have to say that i was surprised by the comments of GG, but pleased to hear that we COULD see some form return from what had been disappointing signings. As i said we need to take these games a bit more seriously as it allows our Fringe players more competitive games to test themselves in. Oh Well.

You make a very fair and valid point about Eze, he is a talented player but it is important to remember in the making, and our fans need to remember that.
That is why i am always cautious in my praise when signings are made from lower leagues and when they cost a lot, as it does take time to adjust and unfortunately Palace are not a club that can afford that luxury.
Hence why i am not sure if we brought in Benrahma as well at the same time is a risk too far to take for CPFC? again he is an exciting player like Eze but that has been in a lower league, hopefully if it happens i am then proved wrong.

I wonder what all those who were criticising Roy for not starting either Eze or Batshuayi before kick off on Saturday think after their underwhelming performances last night.

Yeah, I have the same slight doubts about Benrahma coming as well.

We can't build a team around these players in the same way, they will have to do their job in the system and have some defensive duties too. Could we have both of them on the pitch at the same time?

I don't know the answer and haven't seen enough of either of them but I'm not totally sure.

Batshuayi will also do less defensive work than Ayew or Benteke if he gets a starting place.

That will be the bigg challenge for Roy. Can he find the balance between increasing our attacking threat and goals and keeping our defensive strength too.

Since we got three points on Saturday and both those players are available against the wankers they would have to agree that he nailed it. Last night doesn't matter a toss and the only reason they weren't on the beach is that it is jolly cold there and blowing a hoolie.

I am with you on that. The 3 defensive juniors did better individually and collectively than expected which is I think what most have said, but didn’t ‘star’. Kirby had looked better in pre-season cameos and in U23s is very solid but didn’t catch the eye although got little help from those around him. The rest of midfield stuck to passes I could make from my armchair. TBH my Lounge wall could have provided more creativity and last November my roof showed more mobility ..... So star is not a word to be used in a sentence re the game. Unless you add ‘ved’ and follow it with ‘of any excitement’.

It’s done and quite glad.

I see the BBC are calling that an "epic shootout" now. I thought it was the kind of epic shootout you have after a heavy-duty curry following three days of being unable to go to the bog, but maybe it's just me.

Not that I’m particularly bothered, but we must have the worst League Cup record of any top flight side in eight straight seasons. Haven’t even made the quarters.

2013/14. 2nd Rd
2014/15. 3rd Rd
2015/16. 4th Rd
2016/17. 3rd Rd
2017/18. 4th Rd
2018/19. 4th Rd
2019/20. 2nd Rd
2020/21. 2nd Rd

A consequence of keeping more than an eye on staying up each season.

Kirby when ever I see him seems like abit of a nothing player, he seems quite weak and passes sideways. I think to start he next to Meyer created quite a weak midfield.

Jach and Inniss were decent and seemed confident. Schlupp gave a lot of effort, won alot of ariel battles and hustled for example the Kirby cross but wasn’t on his best game.

I went for Inniss as I think he won some good challenges, but could have gone for Schlupp.

Honestly the only reason I can think he played so far within himself is that he was expressly told not to do anything that might create an injury, either by opposition mistimed/intentional wipeout tackle or exacerbating the muscle strain he got last time out. We have to prioritise the league whether we’d like a cup run or not, as this is likely to be a very tough year

I understand why you are reaching for an explanation but I am not sure I would choose that one personally.

I just think if that was such a concern surely they just wouldn't bother playing him at all though would they? He could have achieved the same as he had last night on the training pitch and been totally safe. I suspect it's best to ignore the whole match and look forward to seeing him at ManU although I doubt he will start up there.
