What on Earth. That midfield four is bereft of any creativity. We have wide midfielders capable of playing in a 442 and you are benching them to play defensive midfielders there.

Because he’s risk averse and wanted more experience in the team after a difficult run. I didn’t like it but i suspect that’s why.

I think Ayew put in a decent second half performance to earn a start. Everyone else... nah. The second half performance was what got Ayew player of the year last season, let's hope he can replicate it going forward.

I thought PVA looked alright in midfield. I'd actually say our best midfielder on Friday, albeit a 15/20 minute cameo. Tackled & passed forward, which is ironic.

Creativity, do we posess that or put another way have you seen any? the reality is we are very much a workman like side that lacks fluidity or creativity especially when Zaha is missing.
Sometimes you pick a side to suit and in this instance it is to face Two sides Arsenal and Man City who are on top of their game and would simply brush us aside if we try to compete with their style, for these games we need to contain and catch them on the break hence why my Front Two selection.
Have you not realised apart from beating a very very poor Sheff Utd side, we have been shambolic recently even overun by a team with 10 men, what about the Wolves game? do you need any more examples, this selection is trying to ensure we dont allow the same happening.

Good point, both Eze and Ayew can actually hold onto the ball, even if we can't get a shot off, the more time we have the ball the less time the other side has it to put pressure on the defence and score.

I wonder what the odds are on Palce coming out of two games against Arsenal and City with a better goal difference than we went in with?

Agreed. We need to relieve pressure on the defence and the best way of doing that is having one or two players at least who can travel with the ball and get us up the pitch. Most of the other players just give the ball away and pile pressure back on the defence.

As for the goal difference after the two games, I’d be surprised if it isn’t worse. I’d take a point from the two games.

Outside of Eze and Zaha, there isn't much in our squad, on that we agree. There are other ways of being more solid than to cram the midfield with four midfielders that are slow, average to poor passers of the ball. To carry a threat against teams like City and Arsenal, having pace on the break and players capable of carrying the ball is essential.

You do that midfield i suggested an injustice, they are All International players with huge experience and solidity which is what will be needed, they are certainly capable of passsing but lack creativity and fluency and that was the debate. As i said this is against Two superb passing sides that we simply cant compete against so we have to do the next best thing, and that is contain and catch them on the break which Eze and Zaha can provide us with and are our best options.
As i mentioned previously other than that crucial Sheff Utd win, we have been on a terrible run surely you must realise that? so stopping the rot against these Two dangerous teams is vital, and then show more adventure when playing lesser sides that come up and go for it with a better balanced attacking side. Remaining in the premiership should always be our priority and if that means playing to your strengths in our case that is defensively which may not always be popular with fans, but so be it to achieve our end goal.

I think Ayew is in poor form and the shadow of the player he was last season. We will need to be really solid Thursday night and PvA is very good going forward and it would allow Eze to play centrally. Can’t see Roy doing it but the fact he tried PvA in midfield Friday suggests he has certainly thought about it considering Schlupp is out for a while and we won’t be spending any money.....
