Reading between the lines it looks like the Premier League have possibly banned them from owning any of the Premier League Clubs?!

One standard for Man City, another for Newcastle - my Geordie mates will be very disappointed!

What are the odds some of the existing dodgy owners in the prem were behind this investment being shooed off?

Seems apt that the stumbling block for the premier league was the Saudi state's pirating of TV football matches rather than human rights abuses and so forth. Priorities and all that.

As happy as I am that this hasn’t happened for footballing and moral reasons, can’t help thinking Newcastle have been stitched up here. The likes of Man C, Chelsea and Wolves all have very dubious owners to say the least.

I suppose it’s not in the big clubs interests to have another massively wealthy club vying for those Champions League places and honours. And there lies the truth in why this hasn’t happened I would guess.

Howay the Saudi's....

Did Newcastle fans really expect this to end any differently ?

We might get a proper replacement for Benteke before they get new owners.

Any club being taken over by the Saudi royal family would have encountered this problem.

The whole thing is very specifically relating to this issue of the broadcast rights, which has been escalated to the WTO and is still a major issue for the Qataris, who pay a lot of money for official broadcast rights:

It would have been alarming to see the Premier League let the Saudis in, given the fact they have spent the last few years ripping off the Premier League and a number of its most important stakeholders as part of a geo-political stunt which has nothing to do with football.

Toon fans are in a state of hysteria about some kind of conspiracy against their club from the London and Manchester media elites. It's nothing to do with that - but they are swaddling themselves with the fantasy anyway.

In the fullness of time, hope they realise it was a bullet dodged. Ashley is bad, the Saudis are worse.

My opinion - feel free to disagree - is that the Toon army have played quite an active role in making their club an unappetising investment. Ashley is a huge problem, but there has been a toxic atmosphere and mentality of entitlement at the club that pre-dates Ashley. It's a wasps nest of angry, stupid, over-indulged men who have a hair-trigger instinct to criticise anyone and anything. A new owner could pour money into the club, achieve nothing and end up just as hated as Ashley by those fans.

Newcastle right now - a lot like Palace over the years - has a face that only a mother could love. You would need to really love and understand that club to get it right. Unfortunately nobody is forthcoming with the money required.

Awful situation for their fans, but jumping into bed with the Saudis and throwing unfounded accusations around has lost them more than a few friends.

Good post Mr Hedgehog.

Mike Ashley might not be the nicest man on the planet but has them mid-table in the Premier League and is not ripping off the fans and ripping millions out of the club like the owners of Arsenal and Man U for example.

But what I don't get with the 'Toon Army' is why they aren't embracing a fan take over. If the Toon Army is so vast, so loyal, so passionate and so united why can't they get it together to buy out the club?

I think other fans would give them help and respect, at the moment wailing that they aren't going to be owned by arguably the most societally repressive, culturally evil and provably murderous monarch-dictator on the planet makes them a laughing stock at best, but probably sick in the head would be a closer mark.

Have always assumed that owning a Premier League club and all the overheads that come with it would be prohibitively expensive for fan ownership in the Premier League's current ownership model.

Surely you could have tens of thousands of Toon fans putting money in without scratching the surface? And can you imagine them trying to agree on anything...

But somebody smarter than me might have some figures to prove fan ownership is viable.

If you fancy a laugh, look at #PremierLeagueisCorrupt on Twitter. They genuinely do not understand - or don't want to understand - why this decision has been made.

Even funnier was this chap on 606 wailing about "Wafa Benitez":

Bruce will be pleased. Hes done a good job for them and was gone if this went through. Considering the job was toxic because fans wanted benitez back he's handled is well.

The introduction of FFP and the timing of their period of dominance is not a coincidence. Prior to FFP they were competitive leagues.

Yes, I think they did

I think they thought that Wor Jackie Milburn was soon going to be forgotten all about, and a new raft of superstars would soon be playing for the Toon and they would get back to doing what they do so well, winning trophies. Except they haven't actually won many trophies and very few people remember the last time they did
