How is it decided (normally)? I'm guessing the team that wins the toss gets to choose if they take the first kick or the second... does the team that loses the toss get to choose ends, or has that been prearranged as in this case maybe?

Or does the winner of the toss get to choose one or the other (order or ends)?

They've got just under 37,000 tickets for Wembley and season ticket holders can buy six each.

To answer my own question. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Procedure

The following is a summary of the procedure for kicks from the penalty mark. The procedure is specified in Law 10 ("Determining the Outcome of a Match") of the IFAB's Laws of the Game document.

The referee tosses a coin to decide the goal at which the kicks will be taken. The choice of goal by the coin toss winner may only be changed by the referee for safety reasons or if the goal or playing surface becomes unusable.

The referee tosses the coin a second time to determine which team will take the first kick.
So was the safety clause invoked by the referee, and if so on what grounds?

In a thread specially formulated to slag off Charlton you choose to go after little Jonny Williams instead?

I hope they are winning until the 119th minute, then Blunderland equalise, then the mackem twats get a corner which is headed and just about to go wide of the post until it hits Clive Mendonca in the bollocks and goes in, after he had run on to protest at the ref for giving a corner away.

Didn't they finish 4-4 in a final a good few years back, Clowns winning on pens?

Can’t remember the score at full time but they certainly beat Sunderland on penalties back, I think, in the late 90s, with Mark Bright a penalty scorer.

Just had a look on Charlton no-Life. They have an entire thread devoted to taking over Trafalgar square if they win. Very Seaweed like. Saddos.

This is the League One play-off, yes? The competition to become the 47th best team in the country

Eventhough i was never a fan of his but i tip my hat to Bowyer for the incredible way he has turned around Charlton's fortunes under very extreme circumstances.
They really do have a very good chance of getting back into the Championship this weekend as we all know Sunderland can blow hot and cold, it promises to be an interesting contest.

The Police were on the pitch as soon as the ET whistle went. I'd be interested to find out why exactly, and what safety reasons given the mass pitch invasion that followed the last penalty kick.

Surely it would have been safer the other end given how much further people would have to jump to get onto the pitch?

Doncaster fans were getting excited and jostling stewards etc after each of their goals. A pitch invasion down that end might have caused some issues. I'm not saying it's right, just what I've heard.

Was 4-4, Clive Mendonca scored a hat trick, was a very good game, Sunderland deservedly losing for wearing the bloody awful Gold / Bronze kit they had at the time. Made Sasa Ilic a name for a few months despite being a distinctly average goalkeeper.

Sunderland local lad Micheal Gray missed the crucial penalty.

The poor Donny fans would have been pelted with custard pies and drenched with water from the squirty flowers on the clowns lapels. Not to mention getting whacked with those oversized shoes.
