Rugs or carpets.

When your house is floor tiled throughout, should you rug it, or carpet? I hear Turkey is the best place for rugs. Where for carpets?

Rugs are crap. Best to stick with tiles as nature intended. Carpets are unhygienic.

My mum and dad live in Spain and had this issue. In the winter in particular they like to have carpet to try and keep the house a bit warmer. They got a big carpet rug from a stall at the local zoco market. It nearly is as big as the lounge. In the summer they roll it up and store it in the garage. Fitted (wall to wall) carpet is almost impossible to source in Spain apparently

+1 for unhygienic

I was in a kebab house in Helsinki a few years ago and the tops of the dining tables were carpeted. Not unsurprisingly, two of our group were very ill the next day.

I like a nice floor carpet though..

Some people get paranoid and insecure about plain old tiles though, they then pay stupid money on some crap weave that never lasts.

Wood with underfloor heating. Carpet in bedrooms. I appreciate that tiles are the more sensible choice in hotter climes though.

I know a guy who will do you a deal on rugs and carpets, his name is Aladin. Watch out for his mates though, they are a bunch of thieves.

DE sounds like your folks have got their heads screwed on. We have an apartment in Bulgaria in the mountains. In winter our wood laminate and tile floors never get warm. No underfloor heating just sheets of concrete. Therefore going with rugs is the way to go for colder periods, then rolling up and storing for warmer times makes sense if you have somewhere to store them.

For rugs I'd recommend a non slip rubberised mesh to stop them moving.

Surely you are not saying they can give meaningful consent?

They have kids too
