On this day - 4th November 1972

49 years ago today.

Very special memories for me.

"Don Rogers makes his debut for Crystal Palace after signing from Swindon Town and scores in the 1-0 defeat of Everton".

Sir Don ... the reason for my ridiculous 49 year rollercoaster ride ..

A rare occasion of me siting in the Arthur. Still see him streaking away from the half way line.

You are right about Don Rogers, a sight to behold when on his stunning runs and watching him just glide past defenders was sheer joy watching. My one regret is we Palace fans did not have the opportunity of seeing him at his majestic best which was reserved for those Swindon fans.

One of the few goals that has stuck in my memory over the years.

Was at that game in the Arthur but up the other end. Was basically behind Rogers when he scored. I don’t think I dreamt it but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t work out how the ball had gone in, never having seen anybody dink one like that.

He bought a house at the top of Marlpit Lane opposite the Army Barracks. I used to work at weekends and school holidays and got his autograph when I worked at his house. My hero after his goalscoring debut!

Remember the game well.

He had been pretty much anonymous up until that point. Then the ball from defence sent him away like a train, leaving everyone in his wake (apologies for the mixed metaphors, but you get the drift). No-one had a hope of catching him and faced with a one-on-one on Lawson, cool as you like, chipped it past him. I had never seen a Palace player with such skill and composure in those situations - and I still haven't since.

And the best was still to come. Still my best and favourite player ever.

Sadly we were relegated with the best team we had had in the 4 years since promotion. I still wonder if we would have stayed up if Bert Had had remained in control until the end of the season to make the change and we had brought in Big Mal then.

Watch out for my 16th December thread (unless I get beaten to it).

Still prefer the previous year’s one without the white stripe down the middle but I guess the Rogers connotations with the subsequent shirt completely over shadow that previous one. Also it was a “surviving season” shirt as opposed to the Rogers relegation one. Prior to this top flight spell there were precious few of those. Both very good obviously.

Wish my memory was as clear as the above posters. I know I would have been there, I know I would have been standing about 3 or 4 crowd barriers down to the slight right of the Holmesdale boys. I know I would have had about 3 rolls of white ticket roll in my pocket for chucking when and if a goal came along... possibly in the direction of baby face if he was around at that time. Other than that just a vague memory of Don Rogers running along the extreme edge of the wing at a very impressive speed.

Remember the weekend quite well as I was living in Liverpool. Left Lime Street station on the Friday morning, headed to the buffet bar and an Evertonian chum asked what was I drinking, the journey passed remarkably quickly and we went our separate ways at Euston.

Don Rogers shone in every sense of the word from the goal to his pristine white shorts. How did he get through so many matches without getting them muddy. Superb balance.
