Ayew tried but had no support. MacArthur ran a lot but created nothing. Dann looked solid and the rest were poor

Can't see how anyone would get above 5 tonight and most would be below that.

The positive is that it doesn't matter a great deal in the scheme of things. And as much as I'd love to see us in Europe, with this squad it would probaby do us more harm than good. I'll gladly take a comfortable mid table finish and hope that we can strengthen in the final third where we are painfully short of creativity and options.

We're even lamenting the loss of Benteke - someone who would not have scored but would have held the ball up 30 yards from goal. Great.

My only real gripe is the way Hodgson set us up against a very defensive opponent, and his refusal to make any serious changes. I'm genuinely amazed that Pierrick didn't get on at all. Maybe this was a message to the board but it wasn't a good one.

Guaita - 4 - not a terrible mistake but by his high standards he has to save that.

Ward - 4 - kept losing the ball when in advanced positions. He's a solid defender but very limited these days going forward and we need a new right back next season.
PvA - 4 - regular sloppy passing. Poor defending too and rarely got forward with any effect.
Dann - 6 - thought he was solid.
Cahill - 5 - some uncharacteristically sloppy passes as well, but defended ok.

Luka - 3 - really poor on the ball and his setpieces were even worse.
Kouyate - 4 - looked well off the pace. Any one of the three midfielders could have been subbed at half time.
McArthur - 4 - very below par for him. Seems to pose no threat going forward these days.

Townsend - 4 - trying not to be to harsh on him as he hasn't played much, but he has to offer more than this. He is very predictable in his approach play and seems to ;ack pace now. At least he tried.
Wilf - 4 - played within himself until the last 15 mins when he came to life. He should have been moved centrally to play up front with Ayew.
Ayew - 4 - another who tried but nothing came off.

Subs:

McCarthy - 3 - apart from one excellent cross field pass, he added nothing.
Meyer - 5 - I thought he was neat and tidy but doesn't look like he will ever be the difference in tight games.

Hodgson has to carry some of the responsibility for that as he was overly cautious against a poor team, and then he didn't gamble with some of the younger players when we were clearly not going to score.

When we had spells of possession we looked like we wanted to walk the ball into the net. Oh well, onto the next one.

A dose of reality, I know Burnley have their injury problems and it’s easier to play in away games in those situations as you just sit back and keep the ball, which they did pretty well to their credit.

The trouble is, our injury problems are only an issue because our squad is so thin even with a fully fit squad, especially with the 9 sub rule.

The fact we have 42 points is impressive because the lack of spending this season was seriously underwhelming. I know we’ll make a loss potentially by being a bit more ambitious next season but we’ll end up finishing about 13th this season if we’re lucky. The prize money alone for finishing 8th is enough for a decent player to have an another option which we badly needed tonight but we haven’t spent anything of note for some time.

Slight if’s and but’s in my analogy and I know football is still a business but the setup really came home to roost tonight, I hope it’s addressed next season.

I don't know how to rate what just happened. Man of the Match I guess is Roy Hodgson haha. Despite getting no effort of anyone worth mentioning, we played an opponent that's of our approximate equal and only lost 0-1.

I thought Josh Brownhill played very well for them even the theatrical roll which maybe should have taken us down to 10 men.

I thought Townsend did ok. Ayew and McArthur could have done better. Meyer should have been brought on earlier. Dann was better than Cahill again. Wilf played a few great passes in the first half but not enough movement around him to open areas for him to dribble. Burnley were better than I expected. It was Bournemouth's shiteness and Luka scoring a great freekick that won us that game, today we didn't have that so we lost.

Good assessment OP.

I look at our midfield and formation and itís clear to see our problems. If you roughly break the roles into holding(6), box-to-box(8) and number 10, it becomes apparent that while we have lots of central midfielders we donít have enough variety.

Milivojevic holding, Kouyate holding, McCarthy holding, Riedewald holding. Mcarthur is somewhat of a box-box type, but ageing. I donít know what Meyer is considered to be, but his future is not with us. Itís clear to see why we are such low scorers, we donít create, we donít have the personnel to create.

Desperately need to address this in the summer. A dedicated number 10 is a must.

I am surprised peeps rate MM. He was brought on to create a goal, which involves advancing the play forward and/or putting the ball at risk, but all his little passes did was transfer that responsibility onto someone else

Dann MOM, Ayew, AT and JMc alright, Luka poor and the rest modest at best

Meyer can control the ball, and unlike the rest of our midfield he can pass it accurately. But that’s not the same as having vision and creative ability. He has very little. He has no pace, no skill to take players on and his passes just retain possession. That said he still should have played at least 45 mins. He should play until we can buy someone better, allowing us to move MM on.

high press Luka, he gets caught in possession time and time again. Double up on Zaha, keep your defensive shape, and then score from a set piece. Its a template to beat Palace isn't it?

The match just told us what we already knew, we've got a really important window coming up. We need to shift high earners who Roy doesn't want/rate, ie Sakho and Myer, and get in some quality youth to give us attacking options.

Cant see Andros, for example, being anything more than a bench warmer next season

I wonder if that is a positive thing trying to continually direct the play. They can all hear him and if he shouts something different to what they were going to do, it just introduces hesitancy or doubt.
