Yes, the players were poor last night, but I feel Roy must take the majority of the blame for such negative tactics against a Burnley side that were so hampered by injuries that they couldn't even fill a full bench.

To sit back and allow Burnley to dictate play, just threw away the initiative right from the first whistle.
Closing down was non-existent and that just gave them time to pick out their passes and retain possession.

On the other hand, Dyche had his players at our heals every time we gained possession. We were pressured into mistakes and they kept winning the ball back. Luka was particularly guilty. They were far more positive and deserved their win.

We need a fresh approach and some young hungry talent. I fear for us if we go another transfer window with little activity.

Thoroughly dejected this morning.
Agree with this.

We play every game as if it's against Man City away.

Luka will get away with performances like that for a lot longer after scoring recently unfortunately. An absolute liability that cannot retain possession and continues to give away ridiculous free kicks in dangerous areas. I really do not understand why he is so highly rated. Kouyate is not much better in the middle, CB is his position. McArthur must get so pissed off playing with such dross. Meyer should be playing in there, especially now that we are safe.

We need to sign first team players and prepare for life without Wilf, who is even better when played wide right. Dyche nullified him last night and we had nothing else, literally nothing else and this has been the case for a while. Hodgson is so lucky to have him, as are we - It is going to send us down if we continue to fill the team with aging, defensive cloggers. I thought Townsend tried hard and had a few flashes, whilst Ayew had an off-day.

Grim game, out thought and out worked.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

One thing is ever more clear after this: we need a whole new midfield. Apart from MacArthur all the do is pass is sideway and backwards and never bother going forward at all.

Shitshow, meyer was the only player that gave us something different with his movement and link up play, everyone else was pedestrian ,predictable and slow. Give jairo, meyer and some youth a chance now ffs.

Given Roy's meticulous tactical planning, why was McCarthy marking Mee when he scored? Burnley only had two big players, their centre backs. Surely Dann & Cahill should mark them at set pieces!

Given CM is where we have the most personnel and options and we have them sitting on the bench, if they were not doing what the manager wanted you would expect him to change it for someone that will.

Either Roy is a weak man manager who is afraid to stand up to the players, or he is perfectly happy with what they are doing.

Listening to the Sunday League manager shouting all game it seems they were quite happy with what they were doing.

First half was woeful. Jimmy was in the midfiled by himself! Kouyate was anonymous and Luka terrible on the ball.

Second half was a significant improvement to be fair. McCarthy made an instant impact and we controlled the game. So much so Burnley basically scored with their only attack more or less and that was a goal keeping error.

Problem was we had no focal point, no forward in the box. Ayew worked hard and showed promise but he was always deep or out wide. We did what we have always done in getting to promising positions with no one in the box. We try to work our way in for a tap In and overplay it with no one taking a shot.

Overall though a poor game. One that highlights our need for another forward and how important benteke is to how we play without even scoring a goal! Its probably a good thing our european dream looks over. We barely have the squad for the league alone and I can’t see us signing the reinforcements for league, cups and Europe. We’d risk our place in the premiership

Guaita 4 - only real call to action and messed it up
Ward - 7 defended well. None of the few attacks got beyond him. Put in the 2 best crosses of the night
Dann -6 solid whenever called upon but a quiet game
Cahill - 5 solid when called on but could have done better on the end of attacking crosses
Pva - 5 busy but a few stray passes when he could have opened things up
Jimmy MOTM -8 our only midfiled player first half. Absolutely everywhere again
Luka - 2 awful first half, slightly less awful second
Kouyate - 4 anonymous
Townsend - 6 not awful but looked a player that hadn’t played much football and had no one to aim for
Ayew -7 huff and puff but he isn’t a target man. He did his best stuff wider and deeper but left no one in the box
Zaha - 6 flashes of himself but ran into trouble when 3 against one.

McCarthy - 7 Changed the game. Second half was ours bar the goal. Shame he had no creativity in front of him
Meyer - 6 did ok. Being overhyped on here again. He could play more centrally but doesn’t have the pace or strength for the wide positions. Some nice short passes but that’s about it. I don’t know how to unlock his potential but in the front 3 isn’t it

Poor game. Hard watch. We miss benteke (a target man type) or even a more natural forward. European football isn’t likely now given the fixtures. Might be a blessing.

We must sign the right players this summer

They had another chance later on from a free kick, Tarkowski knocked it down to someone, possibly McNeil, but who was challenging Tarkowski in the air? PVA.

Roy was totally out-thought by Dyche last night and showed how much better an manager he is.

Another reason why we are stronger with big Ben playing. So good at defending free kicks. Out of interest here are the Daily Fail ratings:
MATCH FACTS

CRYSTAL PALACE (4-1-4-1): Guaita 5; Ward 7, Dann 7, Cahill 6.5, Van Aanholt 6; Milivojevic 6; Townsend 6.5 (Meyer 77min), Kouyate 5.5 (McCarthy 46, 6), McArthur 6.5, Zaha 6; Ayew 6. Subs not used: Hennessey, Sakho, Tavares, Woods, Mitchell, Riedewald, Perrick.

How can things gone so horribly wrong? before lockdown we showed character and spirit in our play and endeded up unbeaten in our last Three games without conceding a goal, we then resumed after lockdown played Bournemouth and showed we continued where we had left off by playing with controlled discipline and real belief again.
But sadly since all of that spirit and belief in our play has gone to pieces, ok we can accept the Liverpool defeat was expected but Not in how we surrendered in such a spineless way.
Then we play a Burnley side last night who had THREE of their Main Strikers out injured and their bench which they could not even fill with the full complement allowed and which was made up with basically Youth players, yet still had the belief, character and fight into knowing how important a win last night was in their quest for a possible Europa place, and the team they were facing were above them and needed beating to help them achieve that goal, and did so comfortably.
Make no excuses this was a gutless performance by a Palace side that despite having as close to their best side out as they could, yet failed miserably against what in all honesty was simply a side no better than being just a workman like side and with basically ONE outstanding individual Dwight McNeil to guide them through, who was outstanding in his play for someone so young.
Where does it leave us now? probably to finish the season in around 12/13th position if we are lucky especially with that difficult run of games to come, however for CPFC with how Roy Hodgson has had to operate with hands partly tied and with a squad that has lacked quality in several areas to achieve that final position is a good achievement under the circumstances, but after having promised so much of late it now feels like a real let down.
Moving forward, this summer it is going to prove crucial to see how the Board respond and to the strengthening of the squad which is clear to see is needed urgently, make no mistake changes is needed as far too many players looked spent of ideas and what to offer, and even our talisman Zaha looks in need of a change and offers very little currently so for all concerned he should be sold so as to rebuild. But the key then to all of this will be how the Board react, if they continue as in previous windows and NOT support the manager plus without our talisman? then troubled times lay ahead for sure as Roy can only work so many miracles and sooner or later he will become disillusioned with the lack of long overdue support, in what will certainly be his last season in charge.
To prepare ahead and lay the solid foundations of a new side it needs to be done this summer so as they are allowed to bed in preparation for any incoming new manager, no doubt it will be said money will be tight and i am not naive to believe otherwise, but if we research our targets well also look at markets where there is value for money to be had and then wheel and deal shrewdly, should make signings affordable.
Relegation is NOT an option to the long term health of CPFC.

The win/performance at Bournemouth lulled me into false hope but sadly the last 2 games were more like I had expected, fearing the 2 games a week would unravel us. Last night felt worse somehow because we were playing a team that arguably has as many squad depth/quality problems as we have and yet we rarely troubled their goal. It’s not that we didn’t create/build any attacks, it’s more that we never looked like scoring. A goal would have been a surprise or maybe shock is a better word.

Their goal wasn’t great. My question is less about why Mee just beat McCarthy to the ball and steered it towards the corner, or why Guaita inexplicably had it covered but then failed to save it. It’s how, in that scenario did Cahill manage to lose Mee completely to get there in the first place? Once behind they dropped 5 yards and tightened everything down.

The over riding feeling I had watching was that they all seemed distracted.

Guaita - 4 - he looked shaky again with the ball at his feet and the one real save he had to make he pushed up and onto the post instead of away. He had dabbed a cross earlier into the danger area but got away with it.
Ward - 5 - started well and made our best cross of the night but fell into a rut.
Dann - 6 - very solid but seemed toothless up front.
Cahill - 4.5 - lost Mee for the goal, his distribution/possession was again not great.
PVA - 4.5 - Brownhill was never contained despite him doing a solid defensive job on Wilf. Seemed to make some odd decisions with his runs.
Kouyate - 3 - looked positively scared of possession and desperate to get rid of it to someone else next to him. Seemed to be talking to himself as he walked off at HT.
Luka - 4 - never hid from possession but it was a poor game from him.
McArthur - 6 - the only hope we had in midfield and again covered a huge amount of ground and roles. Seems to have lost his edge in the box but TBH he can’t do everything and with Kouyate and Luka so underwhelming he looks lonely out there. Should have done better with Joel’s cross.
Townsend - 5 - tried to make a difference but like the rest huffed and puffed.
Ayew - 4 - having had such a wonderful season it’s difficult to watch him struggle so badly right now. Almost looks as if he is trying too hard now.
Zaha - 5 - picked some good passes. Contained performance but I hadn’t expected to see him so a positive.

McCarthy - 5 - strengthened the middle when he came on and we were more solid and able to sustain attacks but didn’t unlock anything.
Meyer - 4 - showed us his great touch and delightful 180 degree turn in one fluid movement but has little to no impact on the game. Was hoping in a game devoid of creativity we may see something but he fell into the same rut.

This was probably our easiest game with Burnley’s problems but TBf they looked rock solid despite having lost their forwards and a weaker bench than even we have. Not sure the rest of this season will be anything more than depressing and pretty sure the BBS will be a depressing read over the coming weeks

Slim pickings for MOTM but I thought Dann looked secure - maybe that was just in contrast to Sakho last game.

Really poor from Luka I thought. Nowadays his good performances are the exceptional ones - hasn't really led by example since he was given the captaincy, unfortunately.

He wasn’t. It looked like that because Cahill had lost him so badly that he could make the run from behind McCarthy and across him.

I think most has already been said re last night.

One observation. In games like that wouldn't it be nice if we too also had some centre halves chipping in with the odd goal. (I realise it was actually Mee's first goal of the season but you know what I mean).
Where are the goals from Dann and Cahill? They both used to be fairly prolific for centre halves, yet now our threat from set pieces is almost zero.

And even if Benteke had played last night would he have got much change out of the Burnley defenders?

Not a good night.

Townsend is one of the most frustrating players I've ever seen at Palace. Capable of brilliance but is so weak on the ball and just runs down blind alleys. When teams double up on Wilf as they often do it should give him more space but he never exploits it in the way Bolasie used to. Will be very disappointed if one of the younger players isn't given an opportunity in front of him, and yes, I expect to be disappointed before you ask!
