I saw a show a couple of years back, where they were scrapping very big thinngs for profit. An episode that was great was them taking apart a decommissioned jumbo jet.

The main reason for using the sky crane - the thing with the 4 rockets that lowers the rover - is to reduce the amount of dust and crap blown up by the rocket exhausts during landing by having the exhausts as far from the surface as possible (because you don't want the dust and rocks that are being blown around to damage the rover).
That footage shows much more dust than I was expecting. I wonder if NASA might rethink this in future missions

I watched a very interesting programme about he building of Perseverence (Built for Mars I think it was called) and the level of care taken in its construction and the prevention of contamination was off the scale. In fact, the sample tubes were so clean that they were getting stuck in their housings due to the lack of hydrocarbons on their surface and subsequent increase in friction.
Vanishingly small amount of earthly contamination will have landed on the surface. |
