RIP.

Yes his manuals were vital back in the day, particularly when you were someone like myself, who was a total ignoramus when it came to cars.

As an aside he attended Sutton Valence Public school, as I did. His son (or maybe one of his sons) also went to the school where he met my brother and the two of them are still very good friends.

He was a godsend to me and my mates all with our mini/viva/anglia/dolomite manuals. You couldn’t run a car if you didn’t do it yourself and your parents had less knowledge than you did!

Have a collection of the manuals that are all bike related.
Great man and a great service to all us that like to tinker

RIP.

Without him I wouldn’t have known about feeler gauges. No Haynes, no Escort.

Had a Haynes manual for just about every vehicle I had in the early days from the Yamaha FSIE through to various cars before they came computers on wheels. Turned me from a mechanical ignoramus in to slightly less of a mechanic ignoramus! At least they got me further in 'repairing' stuff before calling for help to put it back together. Most cars are not mechanically user friendly anymore and most guides to the stuff that is are available on you tube now.

Brother got me an Airbus A380 Haynes manual for Christmas but sadly most airports don't take kindly to my offer to do a service on their aircraft?

I changed the head gasket on my Mk I Ford Cortina using the Haynes Manual - my first ever venture under the bonet. I guess the equivalent at the time to the "For Dummies" books so popular today.

Got it all back together but couldn't get the car started. Of my own volition, I had scraped the head of all the carbon build-up (no instruction in the Haynes manual to do it), apparently I lost all compression because of this, and had to be towed for about 2 miles in 4th gear to get the compression back, which it did.

I digress... RIP (although I'm amazed he was still with us)

Changing the alternator on my mini remains the high point of my pretty rubbish mechanical career. I'd wouldn't have been able to do it without my trusty Haynes Manual.
