Might brighten up yet Al.

If you do go, I think Footstepsofspring will upset the favourite in the 2.50.

Although I usually do rubbish at Lingfield.

Its' what started me gambling years ago - going to Lingfield as a 13 year old with my mates and picking five of the six winners. The biggest one of us put the bets on, only 25ps and such like but the bug was caught that day. Coupled with the fact that because we lived in the parish an ancient bye law meant we got free passes to any meeting we wanted - the road to ruin was only a few paces away.

It was a big win with my first bet that got me into it as well.

I wandered into a betting shop just up the back of Trafalgar Square and did a 1 win double - I can still remember the names of the horses - Ribble Rouser and Khaleel. They both won at 6/1 and 7/1. 56 I won - at the time I was bringing home 22 a week so that was a nice sum of money!

It was only later that I found at that Ribble Rouser had actually finished 2nd and that the winner had been disqualified, so I was doubly lucky.

There were a couple of horses back then that I always backed and that made me a lot of money - Admiral Grenville and Toirdhealbhach. Happy days.

My most memorable was when I was 16. I was earning 25 a week at the time. I went to Lingfield with a nephew who could only have been about 6. First race I put 5 (a days earnings) on a horse called Yunkel at 20s. Bruce Raymond up for Ron Smyth. It came home first but then they announced a stewards and an objection. I sat on those steps shaking like leaf, worrying that even if it kept the race, which seemed unlikely, that I might not get paid out. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity the objection was overruled. The result stood! I walked home with 105 in one pound notes. A months wages for a couple of minutes work. Was I the local hero up the pub that night (when beer was about 26p a pint) Why can't it always be like that?

You're telling me - it's being backed as if defeat is out of the question. It's not form, so it must be "expected" today.

Certainly you can read the form of it's last race as if it was "pulled" tbh.

The game is as bent as a nine bob note, but it's partly being able to spot when a stable jockey combo are up for a touch. I mean I looked at the Creighton's horse at Lingfield, no perceivable chance. Wouldn't surprise me if it went in at 25s or higher as they do like to pull off a stroke now and again. The All weather is particularly bad for no forms winning races they have no right too. As I have said before, it's a self-serving industry these days with so many meetings, a lot of them piss poor claimers where the only people on the make are those in the know. I much preferred the one or two on turf of a weekday with a splash on bank holidays with as many as 20 meetings across the country. Then only joy in it is trying to eke out who is going to be dodgy today.

Didn't even consider Zaahy for the 2.50. Should have done - ok, it finished last of 4 and well beaten on debut but the horses ahead of it have been running well in Listed and Class 2 handicaps. D'oh!

So much for the punt on Driven. And Patavium prince was allegedly making his bid one minute on the radio commentary and not in the frame the next as Choreography came home at 10/1

I'm always saying it but I really should stop betting on these donkey derbies!
