Really?

Not sure i understand this and am interested by it.

So if a striker misses a chance that they should be putting away, that is not as bad as a goalkeeper not making a save you expect them to make?

Both errors are the same in level, both have the effect of changing the game by 1 goal. Why is the goalkeeper error more serious than the striker error?

Probably because there are 10 players in front of the keeper who can score a goal.

In a close game, the keeper only has to make one mistake.

Lille wanted to wring as much money out of Palace as possible for their player. They also had West Ham interested so could easily play us off against each other. They have no reason to commit to a sale early while more than one club is in the mix. The agent, too, is in no hurry. It gets to deadline day and they feel that they might be able to get the extra cash they want as it nears the end. They alllow Amadou to leave to come to us knowing that something 'cropping up' at 11pm when everything is about to be signed off will likely be met in a moment of desperation by the buying club. It is a classic tactic.

Except in SP there is someone, rightly or wrongly, who will play hard ball. An impasse is reached. Too late to complete the deal.

Are you telling me that if we offered a further £5m when this issue cropped up that they'd have said no? Or that they hadn't planned some sort of contingency for him leaving despite the whole month of him being heavily linked with a move away? Of course not. They tried their hand. It failed. They now have serious FFP issues to resolve.

Nothing about it going down to the wire is in our interests other than hoping to capture our man. We are in a situation where the club owning the player aren't willing sellers (good, it means the players obviously has talent) but we aren't prepared to pay over tbe odds 'just to get it done'. Also good but a little risky and certainly frustrating.

Rather than looking at how many deals we do late (we are likely to as we play hard ball) look at who benefits most from eeking it out (clue - it is those looking to make the most cash).

According to Guillem Balague an agreement was reached with the player to come to us. It was just a question of when in January or the Summer.

We met the players buy out clause agreed between him and the Chairman of Ä4 Millon but not the Ä7 Million Buy out clause lodged with the League.

We reduced our bid to Ä2 Million on transfer deadline day due to Getafe messing us around and us having the players agreement to join in the Summer.

We thought we had a back up plan with Ronnow which didn't come off.

I think you may have misunderstood my original point, because you now appear to be making it for me, but to reiterate - wait until the last minute and you have to pay over the odds, and if you don't you won't get the player.

Your last paragraph is telling - we are likely to do most deals late because we "play hard ball" and yet the club that benefits most from this approach of "playing hard ball" isn't us but the other club looking to make the most cash.

Playing hard ball to your own detriment and the benefit of the other side isn't playing hard ball. Just a thought.

Wouldn't surprise me. If he had signed a pre-contract would we announce it?

Or if he has signed one, maybe it has a clause that means it only happens if we stay up? That could be one reason to keep it quiet.

Sounds like the Guita deal was called off a couple weeks ago and Ronnow then became the number 1 keeper target who we didn’t bid for until late on deadline day when it was too late for Brondby to get a replacement. Getafe and Palace pissed off with each other, so deal off apparently.

That would make sense he will be joining but only on the condition we retain our top flight status.

Playing hard ball is not a tactic I will criticise. However, not ending the negotiations sooner (take it or leave it style) and moving onto the next target sooner is the error IMO.

I argued this point on this very thread quite early in January when it was clear we were struggling to agree a fee and was told it's not how it works blah blah blah, and here we are on the 2nd of Feb with Wayne Hennessey as our number one GK. This is how we need to work going forwards.

It seems to me that the mistake is more that we weren't prepared to sign both keepers and ended up leaving it until the very end to switch to plan B.

With Hennessey out of contract in the summer and Speroni surely ready for retirement, we probably need three new keepers by the end of August. We could have wrapped up the Ronnow deal, meaning that Guaita became less vital. This would have strengthened our hand with Getafe and genuinely put us in the position where we weren't too fussed either way whether he joined now or later.

It's not in the other clubs interest to do the deal early if they don't want to sell. The only way it becomes 'worth' it is if they get a humongous fee where they can buy a player and still make a big profit. Look at all the deals where a big player goes early the fees are massive 40M plus. Is it really hardball if you have a budget and you won't go past it? Hardball is what the other side is doing.
