Next VfB match is at home. 1. FC Union Berlin ("Eisern Union") the visitors.
Already 200 special police squad (stationed at provincial town Eutin 30 km away ) are on alert for this one as the supporting mob from the East Berlin district of Köpenick have plenty of time to spend before and after Friday's game which kicks off a 7pm local time. Thank god that Eisern Union are already safe this season.

1.000 + from Berlin expected, so they get sections D and E of the ground. Etap hotel is fully booked so it looks as if one or two will stay overnight in the humble Hansestadt after the game ....

The 10-year-myth

1983 .......... VfB Lübeck relegated to 4th level (100% amateur league Schleswig-Holstein) on goal difference on last day of the season having spent all-season outside the relegation zone.

1993 .......... VfB Lübeck promoted to 3rd level (semi-pro league) at laste after losing promotion play-offs in 6 of their 10 seasons in lowly amateur league Schleswig-Holstein. The promotion-winning goal coming in injury time at Wilhelmshaven. To view the link you have to Register or Login

2003.......... VfB Lübeck finishing the season in their highest league position ever. Full-pro 2. Bundesliga.

Out of interest what is VFB Lubecks financial status ? Are they heavily in debt or have they managed to keep their finances in good order ?

VfB Lübeck are one of only 9 clubs (out of 36 pro clubs) to get their license for next season granted without any restrictions.

Clubs in 1. and 2. Bundesliga (governed by German Football League), clubs in semi-pro "Regionalliga North and South" as well as clubs in our 10 Amateur Premier Leagues which are under rule of German Football Association have to apply for a license.

They are forced to disclose every detail of their pay policy, cash-flow, debts, liabilities etc. It is as if a club is under admininstration.

Clubs which fail to meet the standards set by the governing body will have either points deducted (see: Reutlingen in 2. Bundesliga this season, 6 pts) or stripped of a license thus leading to demotion.

For example: If Waldhof Mannheim get relegated from 2. Bundesliga to Regionalliga South (probably this weekend) they'll have to apply for a license. But with virtually no TV-money in this league available they have a problem to balance the planned budget. It looks likely that Waldhof won't get permission to compete at 3. level but will have to start at 4.th level as "amateurs". This exactly happened to SSV Ulm just recently who went from 1. Bundesliga to 4th level in 2 seasons.

Back to VfB Lübeck: They are financially sound.
They only spend what they've got - based on TV-money and an 8.500 average. Furthermore VfB embark on a intelligent buying policy. New signings are on a free transfer. Basic wages are realistic and lucrative bonuses depend on success. Simple as that.

Nevertheless a few debts still have to be paid over a long period for the construction of the New Main Stand built in 1995. Good to know by the way that the building firm is owned by the clubs president (who used to play for VfB Lübeck in the 50s ).

Plans to demolish the Old Wooden Stand (built in 1924) to make way for a new Stand with standing and seating areas are already prepared.

So the future really looks bright. But VfB Lübeck are in no hurry at all to gain promotion to 1. Bundesliga next season. Survial and consolidation is the top priority. But who knows: If the opportunity arises then .....

Interesting stuff Ruediger. It seems a sensible regulation to monitor clubs like this, but the fate of SSV ULM seems very harsh to me. Was there not uproar at the time about it? Did the fans/club protest?

I didn't even get it right.
It was far worse for Ulm because they fell from 1. to 5. level in 2 seasons!

98/99 2. Bundesliga 3rd (promoted)
99/00 1. Bundesliga 16th (relegated)
00/01 2. Bundesliga 16th (relegated) ........... no license granted / demoted
01/02 Verbandsliga (5th. level 100% amateur status) 2nd (promoted)
02/03 Oberliga

What a decline but Ulm are on they back.
When demoted from full-professional 2. Bundesliga to truly amateur Verbandsliga Ulm were forced to "upgrade" their 2. team (amateurs) to 1st team status simply because all pros went for nothing.

No real uproar in Ulm as the club had been a third-level-team for many years.

Far worse happened to Hessen Kassel a few years ago.

1998 Hessen Kassel (a former 2. Bundesliga club) went bust in Regionnalliga South and the club disbanded. A city with a population of over 200.000is deprived of a football club.

1998 a new Hessen is founded (just like AFC Wimbledon), starts to play at 8th level (Sunday morninmg football)

1999 promotion
2000 promotion
2001 promotion
2002 promotion to Oberliga Hessen (4th level)
2003 runners-up, aaaargh only champions go up to Regionalliga South

Auestadion Kassel, deserted for 5 years but now the Lions are back.

Though draconian, it looks like such measures do actually wake up the clubs and sorts them out so that they can rise again in a financially stable manner. It has to be the way in England now as well, and the points deduction proposals for administratione etc. is the start!

Hey, tonight VfB Lübeck take on 1. FC Union Berlin.
It's the clubs 100. game in professional football and their 50. home fixture.

VfB goalkeeper played in 99 matches.
Local born Ibrahim "Ibi" Türkmen figuered as well in VfB Lübecks first league fixture in professional football way back in August 1995. The young striker went on to play a couple of seasons for a turkish 2. division club before returning to Lübeck.
Now an attacking left back he's become a cult hero at Lohmühle ...... Ibbbbieeee

Half a chance for Union but 3 points gained

Home End before kick-off.

Game was stopped twice because of notorious Eisern Union support. They did jump on the fence far too often.

The moment of excitement. 5 minutes after the final whistle a Union supporter only dressed up in white pants managed to climb the fence and run "a mile" on the field waving his Union flag. Then - how unkind - he was rugby-tackled by three stewards....

VfB on the attack in the 2. half.

Full-time job for the stewards to controll the Eisern Union in Block D and E and have a look at the VfB end as well for reasons I fail to understand.

Bless 'em. Those Berliners are just a bit over excitable.
To be fair I really enjoyed going to their ground, cracking atmosphere, but it seems that the away following is just out for trouble, something I've noticed with a lot of German away followings. Is this a problem at the moment in Germany, or is it just the old Eastern bloc teams? I have to say if ever there was a Rostock v Eisern game, I would avoid it like the plague.

On Union website it was stated that Eisern Union vocal support at Lübeck's Lohmühle was their best of the season away AND home!

You may imagine what it was like on Friday eve.
To be honest I was very very impressed. The best vocal support by an away team at Lohmühle I've ever heard in 40 years of going to the ground.

Their 5-minutes rendition of a song contest between the 2 away blocks was quite brilliant. Block D behind the goal was shouting oony-yoan pointing their arms to block E who was responding even louder: oooony-yoan.
Back to block D and vice-versa. Top-class.

look and listen

By the way VfB fell to their own shortfalls, union unable to muster a single shot for goal. But I don't know what would have happened had Union Berlin lost this one.

Many of their notorious following was climbing on the fences or even higher up the safety net behind the goal. If you ask me: The teams from ther former Eastern Block have a very bad reputation indeed. This must have something to do with them living in deprived areas of this country.
Sad.
