I'm sure there was a lot less fruit as well. Probably a lot of starch and protein (meat and potatoes).

This is a very important factor, the calories were high, with a lot of the populations employement being shifted towards a war footing as well - With the outcome potentially being a long conflict with large scale call up and no end in sight. A lot of people were working two jobs (my Grandad for example on leave or London stationing with the RAF also was an ARP).

A lot more people back then also worked in industry and provided skilled and unskilled labour - and that increased with the war effort. Plus you had lots of people doing things like joining the home guard, working volunteers on the railways, clearing bombsites on top of their ordinary jobs. A big focus would need to be that rationing had to serve the war effort long term and conscripts needed to be free of malnutrition.

Who has time to sit in restaurants for 2-3 hours paying 20 odd quid for 2 courses?
It's all about street food now. Decent ingredients and flavour for £4.50 and you can eat on the go.

Yep. Been going on since Eliza Acton first put quill to parchment, to single out JO is just daft.

He built up his businesss from working in his dads pub after school, got to admire him for that...but people like to knock success so slag him off for his mockney attitude and old school "Cool Brittania" stuff, and now revel in some of his businesses having financial problems. I'm sure it makes them feel better about themselves.

Or, you see some who created a 'personality brand' but you just don't buy into that brand.

I was taken to Jamie's in Canary Wharf once, and the way the menu was written was offensive to anyone with even a passing like of the English language.

The food was also bland and overpriced. I admire his work attitude and success but I find his 'personality brand' rubs me up the wrong way.

I really don't know, but I get the feeling GR is still doing OK, and if so, is it because of the food or because his businesses are well managed and stay within their core competency.

Then again, he may also be about to go belly up.
Seems to be doing okay according to Forbes top 100 list sitting at 35

Ramsay sold a 50% stake in his North American holding company to Lion Capital in June, after the close of our annual scoring period.

Lion Capital will invest $100 million to build 100 Gordon Ramsay restaurants in the U.S. in the next five years.

Ramsay's shows account for more than 75 hours of programming and more than $150 million yearly in ad sales for Fox.
