OK - 1st things 1st. have you got a virus scanner with up to date virus definitions? If so run a full scan straight away.

I just did a scan on ad-aware - whats that?
Also have Stinger. Are these virus scanners? Ad-aware found 953 items just now. Still have weird icons appearing on my desktop such as: re-finance your mortgage!! Bloody annoying!!

Sounds very much like you have a virus. Nachi worm if you are lucky, sasser worm if you are not.
I take it you have windows? If so you will have to run anti-virus software over it and also need to get the lastest critical updates from Windows! |

You MUST get ad-aware, recommended on the previous thread, and get Spybot - search and destory, is possible. Run them all (inc the virus scanner - AVG is the best free one) AT LEAST once, reboot, and see what happens. It won't sort itself out straight away, even after that perhaps, but that should help.
I have done all this and much much more many times, and IE refuses to play ball, so I've switched to a newer, better browser, Firefox. |

953, christ. Make sure ad-aware gets rid of ALL of them after you scan - its no use just scanning. I think it has an annoying habit of asking you to tick every box to delete each item though, which will take you ages but is necessary. Spybot - Search and Destroy may get rid of lots of the icons on your desktop and so on.

Stinger i used and it recognises only 41 viruses apparently.
Best bet is to keep up to date on anantivirus software, i currently have McAfee at home and had all sorts of problems over the weekend. They seem to have gone mostly now i ran a complete virus scan and updated the windows updates. Got into work this morning and they are updating ALL the companies computers with the latest windows updates. They are available here: To view the link you have to Register or Login You need to scan for updates and then install them - it takes a long time though! |

If Adaware has found 953 items then your computer is FULL of unwanted crap (bet you use Kazaa) . Use it and delete everything it finds, then reboot. Adaware is NOT a virus scanner and will not find viruses. You really must get antivirus software, even the free one from AVG will be good enough.

I don't think i've ever had a virus on my home computer and I don't have any anti-virus software installed.
I do however run the much criticised Win98 ![]() |

I got a virus over the weekend and my computer is now completely screwed. I can't even turn the thing on.
At first I got some popup that appeared every time I logged onto the intraweb thingy saying I have 60 seconds to save all my work before the computer shut down... I tried reloading the whole thing from scratch and now it doesn't recognise the operating system. Now I have to wait until Time Computers send me through a disk so I can sort out the partitioning on the CDROM drive, before trying to reload it all again. I'd like to kill the pubescent little scrote who created that virus. Slowly.

Gosling, that is our 'friend' the sasser worm.
Had the same problem, had to isolate the file which the virus was attacking before the warning camne up and then had to scan and delete the virus, Then sort out the windows update! Then while i was doing the windows update the bugger got through again! Was not very happy! |

Has anyone on here who is using 'proper' (i.e. non-free) anti-virus software ever caught a virus and not been able to fix it?

Just re-booted after getting rid of all the little buggers ad-aware found.
Now moving on to anti-virus. But will this mean IE will work again or do I have to re-install? More importantly, will Championship Manager run faster? ![]()

Then do the virus-cleaning thing. I have a copy of the standalone patch I can burn onto CD and mail to anyone having this bother... |
