Why is it unexpected? Surely we expect mutations?

Yeah I tend to let most new variant reports go until they gain momentum. This one seems to have grabbed the attention very quickly. That is not a good sign. The mutations might prove to be a non event, they could even lead to a dominant virus that isn't as dangerous and be welcome but... virologists will have a likely idea on the function of the mutations and there advise has very clearly been move quickly to stop this one.

We shall see

Because it is a lot of significant mutations in one go. At least in terms of detected ones. Its several steps in evolution at once.

Seems to be several mutations in the spike protein making it more transmissible and crucially the concern is it can be resistant to the vaccines. Also it apparently has mutations they think help it avoid the immune system.

I think it was beta that was scary because it was resistant to our immune system. Its got that + more. But beta didn't become dominant because it was less transmissible.

It also has mutations like delta that make it more transmissible. Apparently it has many more that they think will make this more infectious than delta.

Those two together are why the virologist are spooked enough to call it horrific and we are seeing urgent action.

Doesn't mean it will be that bad. It is a possibility though and the extent of rhe mutations is well above the normal pattern

I had no reaction at all to the booster. Even the arm pain from the injection lasted less this time.

I had Covid March 20, AZ1 in Feb 21, AZ2 in Apr 21 and Pfizer earlier this month so looking to get Jansen next in my cocktail.

It's again come from a single patient, who couldn't beat it. And it's just evolved in them.

Only 59 cases confirmed. Beta variant was the one that could have ruined everything. But Delta wiped it out through natural selection. Everything is could and maybe. Nothing really worrying as of yet.

If nothing else itís a massive warning. Wealthy countries need to help vaccinate the world, not just their own people, to minimise the chance of a grim reaper variant.

We are at level zero. They are thinking about lifting it to level one next week. This is for Andalucia only so far.

Was meant to be flying to South Africa in a fortnight for a month to spend Christmas with my wife's parents. I totally get why the restrictions have been put in place but what incredibly rubbish news.

Yeah, no real reaction here, arm hurts a bit. COVID was a lot worse than the jabs.

Heavy stiff arm for me today (18 hours on), but other half is feeling very achy and washed out.

I know we havent seen my wife's family in nearly two years and haven't had a Christmas out there in ten.

Apparently the SA Government are formally appealing against the restrictions. Guess we will see what happens

Good luck with that, more and more countries are applying them, and media in Israel are reporting a handful of cases of the variant there.

I would think the chance that this variant isn’t already circulating in the U.K. are zero. Very worrying.

The only way to stop these variants popping up is to vaccinate everywhere. Unless you have enough jabs to supply everyone on the planet people under 50 in the Western world should not be getting a booster. Those jabs should be going to countries where few people have had a single shot. We cannot go back to restrictions, you will get serious political and economic instability if we do. This is a bit of wake up call in that respect.

I agree on it being a wake up call, but in the ultimate self interest you do need to vaccinate everyone you can (not just over 50s) to minimise the chances of a super variant.

Agree on vaccinating everywhere, but in the case of SA they recently asked for vaccine deliveries to be delayed because they don’t have enough demand for the vaccines.
