It's Greek. It's quite common up here, although it's probably more common in Russia than anywhere (Александр with a choice of diminutives).
αλεξω to defend ανηρ man, genitive plural ανδρος* HTH. BTW in Scots Gaelic it becomes Alasdair. * this also means "scorer of fantabulous goals at the Etihad" :-) - it's true that Andrew and its equivalents in other languages also come down from this Greek word for "man". |
