Metz rise up for the Cup
Metz got the French Cup weekend off to a stunning start, the bottom club winning 3-0 away to Strasbourg. The man who led the way was two-goal Wilmer Aguirre (left). The first half was goal-less, although Strasbourg had much the better of the play and squandered a number of decent chances. But despite losing defenders Manuel Corrales and Sebastian Bassong to injuries, it took Metz only two minutes of the second half to take the lead through Aguirre. Forced to go forward, Strasbourg soon found themselves in even deeper trouble when Aguirre struck again on 63 minutes. Metz could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty, but they completed their romp in added time with a third goal by the 17-year-old Luxembourg player Miralem Pjanic. In Friday night's other tie, Tours won through 2-1 at Boulogne, thanks to a penalty in the last minute of extra time. |

Actually Lens have got a large catchment area up there in the industrialised north of of France. But there's also Lille and Valenciennes up there whose fanbase isn't quite the same. We're talking France here so there's probably some cultural explanation. i'll try and check it out.

French Cup Fever!
After last night's first surprise (by the way, Mosalem wasn't playing for Strasbourg), who isn't looking forward to watching Paris Saint Germain come a cropper against the mighty Le Poiré-sur-Vie this evening (Eurosport France 6 o'clock local time). This is what it's all about. Le Poiré-sue-Vie is in the Vendée region, south of Britanny close to the Atlantic coast. The town?village has a population of 7,500 inhabitants, and their team of amateurs plays in the equivalent of Division 5. For security reasons they are not allowed to play at their home ground (park?) mainly because of the naughty PSG boys. So their match has been moved to the Nantes stadium 65 Km. down the road. They need 15,000 spectators to break even, i.e. twice their population, but they've already sold 25,000 places! Playing in such a big stadium will take a lot of their home advantage away from them, but PSG are having another stinker of a season and I'm sure they won't be relishing this trip one little bit. Allez le Poiré!!! |

PSG fans are a bit silly, they fight amongst themselves apparently.

The system in some French teams like PSG and Marseille is very debatable. The clubs sell season tickets to supporters' associations at very cheap rates, and, as a result, these same groups of supporters seem to think they play some kind of role within the clubs. When their clubs aren't doing so well, which has been the case for PSG and Marseille for a few years now, their fans steam down to the clubs' training centres and hurl abuse at the players or stone the players' cars and even, almost, come to blows with the players or other people connected with the clubs. nheard of in England, I think. As for the fighting amongst themselves, when you see the football the players serve up, they've got nothing better to do... Actually the problem is probably politically related. Left against right, so yes, very silly. I can't ever remember rucks between the Holmedale and the boys in the Whitehorse Lane end, the Shed against the North stand back in the good ol' days. |

Do most of the L1 teams use it as a runout for the kids or do they put out full strength teams?
Quite agree about today. My only consolation about the Palace game was at least I missed watching England p*ss it all up a wall! La Duchere looked like they did well! |

In 2005 Sedan (D2) reached the final. In 2004 Chateauroux (D2) reached the final. In 2001 Amiens (D3) got to the final. In 2000 Calais, from , would you believe the French 4th Division got to the final only to lose 2:1 to FC Nantes in what was a truly memorable cup run. I can't remember the details but I think they knocked out three or four Ligue 1 clubs. In 1999 Sedan (D2) got to the final. In 1996 Nimes, then in the 3rd division, lost the final but qualified for the UEFA Cup 'cos they lost to a team which had already qualified for Europe. They even got through one or two rounds. A lot of the better teams put out mixed teams, half first team players with other fringe and younger players. I think PSG actually put out their first team 'cos if they hadn't, they probably would have lost. Lyon have got a potential banana skin tomorrow against Croix de Savoie (match preview tomorrow lunchtime). They could do with resting Benzema tomorrow - he's already played nearly 40 games this season. We lost a few players during the transfer window, we've got new ones coming in who are not match fit, and we've got one or two injuries. So it could be interesting. |

Nice out
French Cup Saturday round-up Frederic Antonetti (pictured) watches his Nice side crash to defeat at Angers, Auxerre are easily beaten by Bastia but there are no such problems for Bordeaux, PSG and Lille, who all make it safely through to the last 16. Saturday, February 2, 2008 French Cup last 32 Nice and Auxerre both crashed out of the French Cup to Ligue 2 opposition on Saturday night as they lost to Angers and Bastia respectively. Nice's defeat was their first in 13 matches as Angers raced into an early lead via Paul Alo'o Efoulou and then added further goals after half-time when Fahid Ben Khalfallah struck a brace. Habib Bamogo netted a last-minute consolation for the visitors. Auxerre's defeat was even more dramatic as they found themselves three goals down at Stade Furiani within 16 minutes. Corsican outfit Bastia, managed these days by former Marseille and France defender Bernard Casoni, showed exactly why they are challenging for promotion towards the top of Ligue 2 by tearing apart Jean Fernandez's visitors in the early stages. Veteran striker and captain Pierre-Yves Andre, who once of Bolton Wanderers, scored twice in the space of 11 minutes while midfielder Kafoumba Coulibaly netted the other. Once 3-0 up, the hosts relaxed and Auxerre were unable to find a route back into the match. On Friday evening Metz won the battle of Ligue 1 sides against Strasbourg at Stade de la Meinau in the first top-tier clash of the round. Les Grenats turned their league form on its head as they strolled to a 3-0 win with three goals in the second-half. In the other game on Friday National outfit Tours provided the first real shock with the elimination of Ligue 2 side Boulogne-sur-Mer. The giant-killing was performed with 10 men after Tenema N'Diaye was sent-off mid-way through the first period. The minnows went ahead on 76 minutes before succumbing to a last-minute equaliser which sent the game into extra-time. Nevertheless, the third tier side rallied and were rewarded for their efforts when Antony Lopez Peralta slotted home a winning penalty in the final minute of additional time. They will be joined in the hat for the next round draw by Arles who beat Ligue 2 opposition, in the form of Niort, 9-8 on penalties, after a goalless 120 minutes. In other spot-kick related victories, Dijon and Sedan qualified via penalty wins over Paris FC (6-5) and Nantes (4-2) respectively. Lille left it reasonably late to dispose of amateur side Lyon-la-Duchère with Nicolas Fauvergue scoring the game's only goal mid-way through the second-half while PSG recovered from 1-1 to eliminate their amateur opposition, Le Poiré-sur-Vie, 3-1. Amara Diane was the star man for the capital outfit, grabbing two second-half goals to ease their route to victory. At the Stade Bonal, struggling Sochaux needed extra-time and penalties to get the better of Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier. The hosts led 1-0 after 31 minutes thanks to a Michaël Isabey goal but the visitors made it 1-1 on the hour. Sochaux were reduced to 10 men following the sending-off of Kandia Traoré but Montpellier goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren suffered the same fate in extra-time and Sochaux kept their nerve to win 4-3 on spot-kicks. Amiens made hard work of their victory over Ligue 2 rivals Ajaccio (1-0) while the Brittany derby proved to be something of a disappointment - Lorient and Rennes played out a goalless draw before hosts Lorient went through 3-1 on penalties. In Saturday night's other all-Ligue 1 clash, Bordeaux beat a depleted Le Mans 1-0 thanks to a 15th-minute winner from Fernando Cavenaghi. It was the Argentine's 10th goal of the season. |
