FIFA Scandal: Qatar - Winter World Cup / FIFA arrests / Blatter resigns
To view the link you have to Register or Login
The world footballers' union believes the 2022 World Cup in Qatar should be held in the winter instead of summer. With Gulf summer temperatures hitting 50C, FIFPro has said it is pleased Fifa is open to changing the tournament's timing to address the issue of heat. The president of world football's governing body, Sepp Blatter, backed a possible switch to January 2022. And in a statement, FIFPro said it "does not foresee any insurmountable problems in this regard". Which begs the question - why did they win? the bid was clearly to have the games in the summer. It is just plain crazy to accept the bid then change it. Sepp Baltter only last week was saying how Qatar in the summer would be fine. Qatar in the summer was the bid that SB supported and defended. Now it may be changed? How can it have won then? Stupidity that further increases suspicions surrounding how it won in the first place - it certainly wasn't for footballing reasons if they can't host it at the time they said they would - no doubt they'll claim again that it won to increase the appeal of the game in the middle East, but it looks more and more like a stitch up. |

I've got no problem with it being in the Winter - and it's much better for the players and fans. A lot of European countries have winter breaks in their season and it might be possible to tie it in with those ...

Of course, the knock-on effect could be that we'd have to play in our summer, with two seasons effectively merging into one another. Plus, it would give the big clubs the excuse they want to pull up the ladder and reduce the Premier League to 16 clubs - you know, to avoid taxing their overpaid little cherubs with 'too much football'.

Or could just say if they can't deliver the aircon stadiums they promised they just can't have it!

Sepp Blatter will be dead by 2022, what does he care anyway

Simple solution - fail to qualify - we have done it before and i am sure we could do it again.
Of couse that wouldn't help the clubs who have packed their teams with foreign players - oh well **** EM! Think it would be excellent to see a Premier League season where half the players from the big teams were not available for 4-6 weeks (10 games) of the season. |

Just had a thought, won't Sepp Blatter be dead by the time the 2022 World Cup comes along so it would be better for someone else to be more involved in the key decisions. Actually I guess he'll still be Fifa's dictator from his grave(Personally hope he gets turned to ash).

So, if England fail to qualify, and it's known in Nov 2020 - maybe they'll say as you were for the 2021/2022 Season. |

I have no problem with the change. However, I think for FIFA to come out and say it can be changed now is completely unfair. Unless they are willing to do this for any future world cup host that asks it is bullshit. Before the bid, everyone was told this is not an option, and now suddenly it is?
From an Australian perspective (I know most of you don't care about us, but its the example I'm most familiar with. I'm sure similar examples could be applied worldwide), our bid would have been infinitely stronger with that option. We would have had unrivaled access to all stadiums, full support of rival codes and so on. If this goes through as a once off, and isn't allowed again, we will never have the chance to host a world cup as rival sports will simply not release their stadiums, as they will point to the precedence in Qatar and ask why it can't be in January. They were willing to support the bid this time, as they knew it would be a once off, but if they get a sniff there is another option, why would/should they risk their own financial viability? If FIFA wants to start this ball rolling, then I hope they're consistently open-minded in the future. Somehow I doubt they will be.
